Am curious if anyone knows of any DEFINTELY CMR drives that do not work with TE4? If being used externally Sata to Sata only (ie not using Esata on the enclosure). I personally do not know of any, if there are some I'd be interested in model numbers and how hooked up.

JmBach, you know of some model drives that don't work with TE4, do you have a list? CMR drives only, not SMR or SSDs.

Point of order - Can SSD's be included in this list? They are not CMR nor SMR, but they include drives that worked under TE3, but not TE4.
Well I personally only need to know CMR drives that don't work. I know of SSDs that work on TE3 but don't work on TE4 (in fact I don't know of any SSD that currently DOES work with TE4, not even the expensive enterprise models). Maybe some do? There is a thread on some drives that don't work on TE4 but I did not see any that were CMR, mostly SMR or SSD.

There are many CMR drives that don't work on TE4 on Bolt...
List of drives that don't boot under TE4 21.x on Bolt
Three of which I've tried, are the WD 4TB, WD 2TB (one model), and Toshiba 3TB drives that worked for a few months until TE4 stopped that.

I looked at that thread. If you are talking about the WD 4TB WD40NPZZ that is an SMR drive, not CMR. The 2TB 2.5 WD20SPZX is also SMR.

SSD Micron 5210 Ion 7.68TB SSD, but other sizes probably fail
SSD Micron 1100 2TB SSD, but other sizes probably fail
SMR WD40NPZZ, the only 2.5" 4TB WD rust drive
SMR WD20SPZX another 2.5" 2TB WD rust drive.
Not sure, if same as SPZX would be SMR WD208PZX - reported in another thread. Probably same as as WD20SPZX
Could be CMR but says it might work "Possibly" 3TB Toshiba MQ03ABB300
SMR Seagate 2TB BarraCuda STL2000LM015
SMR Seagate 1TB BarraCuda 2.5" ST1000LM048
SSD Crucial SSD (no model number mentioned)
SMR WD60EMAZ
SSD Samsung MZ-76E2T0B/AM - 2TB 860 EVO SSD

So out of the list in the initial post there is only one CMR drive and they said POSSIBLY does not work, not definitely. I am looking for CMR drives that do not work, not SMR or SSD. The update broke a good number of SMR/SSD. If you can name one specific CMR drive that does not work with TE4 please do, other than possibly that Toshiba MQ03ABB300.

I'm not 100% sure, there are 3 WD40NPZZ models that are SMR based in the link you provided, but the WD40NPZZ model I have is not listed in the table, but it most likely is. I think the model I have was intended for server use because it was not sold to the public, so who knows.

I still have the 3TB Toshiba drive, but I "upgraded" it to the 5TB SMR drive. I never truly confirmed that drive works or doesn't work under TE4. I put the Toshiba 3TB as a suspected drive, because I think this drive was one of the most popular upgrade drives in the beginning, and I would have expected many who upgrade to TE4 would have replied about the drives prematurely failing. The only report I saw was someone trying to upgrade a new Bolt with the Toshiba 3TB drive and it had the boot hang. It could have just been a bad drive. If I free up a Bolt again, I might try the Toshiba 3TB drive to definitely confirm if it is failing under TE4.

This site is good for determining what drives are SMR and CMR, not perfect but best I have found. Older and current models.

The HDD Platter Capacity Database

I think the WD40NPZZ is either a pull from some other device or maybe what you say, server. Not sold individually to public.. I wrote to WD at one time asking if it was CMR or SMR. They did not provide an answer, other than they said it was not a retail general public drive.
