Well, it looks like there will be elements of the "killer of the week" to this show. There was more information revealed this week, though, like the doctor at the end.

Interestingly, there was no ulterior motive for Nelson, potentially debunking the theory that they are returning to perform 'hits'.

I don't see how they can justify just one man running the hunt. Well, now the comic book writer and police woman. They can have 2-3 security guards but no other investigators? Oh, and the girl in the hospital....

It would have been better if they showed 20-30 guys in an op center running the hunt and they brought in the cop and Hurley in for special cases they were having difficulty on.

I gotta admit, a child killer was easy to hate. I watched him get killed with considerable satisfaction. I'll keep it in mind, Michael Eklund can do an EXCELLANT villian.

So we have two groups of "Good Guys". One is the detective, the comic book guy, and Hauser himself: the correct age for the time they are in. The other group is apparently "out of time" as are the escaped inmates, because they were on the island when "the event" occurred. That group includes Dr. Banerjee (who got shot) and "The Doctor" from 1960 who appears to be "The Coroner" in the present time facility. Plus (probably) the prison guards visible in the new detention facility, who could be the former Alcatraz guards.

It looks more like "Lost" as each episode is broadcast. I don't have the patience for another 900 page thread in AVS about the overall backstory.

Question... when you watch a David E. Kelley show, what do you expect? Steven Bochco? The creative team behind The Shield, which now mostly produces Sons of Anarchy? Ronald D. Moore?

I felt burned after the finale of Battlestar Galactica. I did not (and still have not) watched an episode of Caprica. I learned my lesson.

Is this Lost? Nope, far from. Is it a similar style to Lost? Absolutely. There's some humor, intrigue, bad guys, good guys, and mystery that rather than unfolding immediately, is revealed slowly. That's their style.

The producers were some of the producers of Lost. This episode was even directed by Jack Bender (and I think he's a producer as well). If you don't want something in the style of Lost, don't watch something created by the same team. If you knew the same team was producing Alcatraz (and that was pretty clear from the moment they announced it), why would you watch if you didn't like Lost?

All that said, I wish we could go back to the days of not knowing who wrote, directed, and produced these series. It used to be, a new show would premiere and viewers would watch, evaluating it on its own merits. Those days are long over, I'm afraid.

There was never a time of not knowing, but there was a time of not particularly caring. I think people are much more aware than they were, partly because the information is readily available online and partly because people care about a certain style of show, like those created by or involving Bochco, Abrams, Kelley, Sorkin, Weedon, et al.

Plus, promoters are more likely to add "From the Producers of..." to trailers and other ads for the new show. Anything to give them an edge and increase viewing.

So what was event was Doc (comic book store guy) alluding to in his past? It sounded like he was abducted and escaped in his childhood at age 11, coincidentally the same age of the child killers victims. He certainly recalled details about mini golf and then saying he was wrong and remembered the cherry pie almost as if he was abducted by the child killer and was remembering his ordeal that he potentially locked away in his memory for so many years. Is Doc also back from time?

The episode could have increased verisimilitude by:

1. The 63'er being annoyed by having to wear a life jacket in the boat while fishing.
2. being annoyed at not being able to smoke in the restaurant.
3. Having to think a little bit after telling Madsen to toss her keys before asking her to toss her phone.

Either that or part of the mystery is how the 63ers are so well adapted to the world 50 years in their future without knowing how or why.

I know that I'm spitting into the wind on this, but apparently, they won't even bother with proper procedure. One of the first things I learned as a newly minted deputy sheriff, back in the day - never, ever give up your weapon. You lose control of the situation, probably get yourself killed, and the hostage as well.

And while it may look cool to shoot your way out of handcuffs, in this case, tiny detective might have ended up chained to a 450 pound dead lump, if the round had ricocheted. Try extricating yourself when that much weight is pulling you through a small orifice.

But, at least we learned some backstory on comic book guy. Still, he's way out of his depth going after a serial killer alone with no training and no weapon. Maybe he should just consult from the fortress. Don't go on away missions.

WTH, it's tee vee.

Really enjoying this show, so far. Only 300 more episodes, I guess (based on 302 inmates when Alcatraz was closed)...

I'm not sure he's dead... yes, I know he got shot in the head and that he looks dead but maybe he's just mostly dead and maybe the 1960's prison doc isn't just a coroner in the present day. That's my theory and I'm sticking to it.

Madsen already looks too young to be in the position she's in (even though Sarah Jones is 29) but the clothes they had her in last night made her look even younger. She could have been playing a 16 year old and I wouldn't have questioned it.

At the climax in the woods, when the shot rang out, my son totally deadpanned: "He got attacked, not from the front but from the side, by the one he didn't even know was there."

I gave him super bonus points for the Sam Neil/Jurassic Park reference.

Ok, so we've got essentially the same plot three episodes in a row. And are we supposed to be surprised that the doctor at new-catraz is the same doctor from old-catraz? I guess we're supposed to be intrigued by what the doctor is going to do with dead body, but I'm having trouble caring.

Not to mention that you don't throw it like 20 feet away. Ditto with your keys and phone. Good luck finding them when the bad guy is gone.

Of course in the show, she found her gun immediately.

She didn't find the gun she threw away; she pulled her backup piece out of her hidden ankle holster.
