Advice: Buy Series3 now or wait (when is new model)?

Howdy all,

My wife and I are getting our first HDTV, and are looking at getting a Tivo to go along with it (I had a nice hacked DTivo before we got married, but didn't bring the dss service to the new house...anyone want to buy it?

).

I see that Amazon has the 300-hour Series 3 unit for $599 before rebate, $399 afterwards:

I'm a bit out of the loop on developments. This seems like a good deal, but if there is a new unit coming by the end of the year, we can hold off. I read about a possible offering from Comcast (our provider here in Houston), but know to stay away from their current DVR offering.

Any advice y'all have would be greatly appreciated!

The "new" model came out in July - look for the Tivo HD model on Amazon - $266 shipped.

Thanks for the reply. I wasn't clear. I was referring to the new "high-end" HD DVR. I know the Tivo HD came out this summer, and that the Series 3 came out this time last year, but don't know what kind of life cycle Tivo has running on it.

So what I should have asked is, Does anyone know if *next* version of the Series 3 will be coming out in the next 3 months?

There is no mention of new models comming.

Highly doubtful anything else will be coming out in the next 3 months....if anything does it would be small variant of the TiVoHD model....large harddrive, etc.

From everything that we've been reading....any new models will be based on the TiVoHD box architecture for the next 12-18 months.

Personally, I think there is still a niche market for the high-end av market, which include OLED front panels, more av equipment integration, etc...That said, if TiVo does decide to continue to push this type of product, it would likely use the base TiVoHD box and enhance it from the current TiVoHD unit is today.

Tivo has said that the Tivo HD is the only new HD model for 2007. Beyond that, who knows.
