I noticed recently when I went to delete something or do some sort of system edit that I got an advertisement in the options. In the main TiVo screen at the bottom there's an advertisement as well. I have no problem with a sub-directory dedicated to advertisements (like in the Showcases and TV Guide section) but it's extremely aggravating to get advertisements elsewhere.

Anyone else agree?

Right now I'm looking at the Lucy and Chris' Sweet Story Of Love ad (for Splenda) at the bottom of the main TiVo options screen. I paid hundreds of dollars for this device and paid $299 for three year's worth of TiVo service... I shouldn't have to see these ads.

I've tried searching for an option to kill them but haven't found one yet...

the terms of service speak about TiVo doing advertising -
TiVo has had advertising along with threads about it for years -

the ad you speak of is on the delete screen after you finish watching a show.
it does not make you do anything different with the remote command to keep or delete the show -which is my litmus test


ETA - anyone drop their TiVo service because of ADS ??

Such specious arguments. They're not "showing" you ads, they are displaying an additional line on a menu. It requires *zero* extra effort to ignore these "ads". And it's not a premium fee, it's what you pay for the TiVo service. There's nothing "premium" about it.

Double dipping? I subscribe to PCMag, send them good money, and they *still* put ads in the magazine. Heck, I have to turn the page to bypass them, that's more effort than the TiVo ads require. And my bank slips little glossy adverts in my monthly statement (well, they used to--I'm eStatements now). I managed to simply bypass them without going all postal.

Revenue is revenue. TiVo can do what they want (within the limits of any contractual agreements, obviously) and we can take it or leave it. That famous free-market choice many of us have. Could TiVo find some level of advertising that would aggravate me enough to leave? Sure. But this ain't even close. Like a .001 on a 1 to 10.

As for your comments, it's not a HUGE deal but I think that if you pay for something you really should have the option to turn off the ads. We can agree to disagree. However, I agree with your last statement. I'm not saying it's enough to make me not use TiVo. I'm a new user and by and large I think TiVo is absolutely amazing.

I had wanted to use TiVo for a number of years but waited for a few reasons, namely high definition. I had also originally wanted to use ReplayTV or some Linux/Unix-based open source DIY solution. In the end, the ease of use factor swayed me toward TiVo (and the fact that ReplayTV is really not a viable solution anymore). In any event, if TivoToGo finally arrives next month AND E-SATA external drives are supported natively then I'll be 100% satisfied with my TiVo Series 3. It would be 110% without ads though.

Not me. The only place I am bothered is the ad at the end of the program on the screen asking whether to delete it. TiVo hasn't overstepped yet for me.

Some places I'd like to see more promo/ad technology where it would be helpful. Specificly, the free Unbox Series Pilot downloads were lacking in promo info that would have been useful - ie. is it NBC or FOX? what date and time? thumbs up to record.

History lesson - this thread will soon have a few folks posting about disliking the advertising, followed by many Tivo Fanatics who literally would not complain about anything Tivo did, no matter how obtrusive or offensive. They will talk about actually liking the ads, or not minding them. I wish to add nothing, other than to tell Tivo that these fanatic posters are not typical of your user base. All normal folks can do while reading such things is to laugh a little at the bend-over mentality of those fanatics.

I love this! We're gonna talk about how we don't mind something. And that makes me a fanboy? There are issues that actually concern me, and I post on them, good or bad. And there are what I consider non-issues, like ads that require absolutely zero effort to ignore. One doesn't even have to change your click pattern (up-delete). So yes, I don't mind them.

Because obviously Mike is so much smarter than us fanboy-sheep hybrids that will do or say whatever Tivo tells us to, since we're completely unable to think for ourselves.

Seriously, dude, we get it. You don't like the ads.

At this point though, they're not going away, so you can either learn to live with it or cancel your service and give us some peace and quiet.

Indeed. Their house; their rules. If you don't like the rules, then don't buy the product. If you complain, but still send TiVo money, then you really don't feel strongly enough about this to have it matter.

I want DirecTV to eliminate commercials on non-OTA Channels. I PAY to receive these channels, why should I have to put up with having to fast forward through their commercials?
