The ads here have gotten worse and more intrusive than even what TiVo has started doing. I guess it is time to leave...

Hold the bus there charles. We don't need to be losing members. OP, just install an adblocker.

Forum admins often think the answer to lower revenue or higher costs is adding more ads, which drives users away that don't have adblockers installed, which is exactly the user you want those ads for.

In fact, one or two simple ads are plenty and get those un-blocked users clicking the ads you need to keep the site running.

Actually if you want to support TCF and the resources here, the better approach is to sign up for TCF Club since the benefit is ad freedom and you're helping keep TCF alive.

If the ads bother you that much, in the top right corner there is a button that says "Remove Ads" where you can upgrade to a premium account so you don't have to see the ads anymore.

The ads on the top or sides of the page don't bother me. Just this morning I noticed I am getting pop up ads that are blocking content. Not good.

Some folks over 40 don't trust spending money over the internet. Those are the people the ads are for. They'll never join a subscription, but they will click an ad because they don't have a blocker installed.

But if you have too many ads, you drive them away or to blockers. For me, it's those inline ads that drive me nuts. The others are fine.

Maybe you don't... I'd prefer a lot less whining posts about ads... and someone running an ad-blocker isn't really a member... rather a freeloader. :)

I'd guess those "complaining" about ads endlessly drive more people away than ads on the site... I know it greatly reduces the number of threads I'll read (I simply write them off once infested - just like I have this one now).

Lurkers are freeloaders. Participants add content, albeit in this case it's negative. The person in charge of the ads should probably chime in here and fix the problem.
I have trained myself to ignore the ads here. Then again some interest me. At least I don't have to watch anything in order to see my content.

If you participated more you'd know that the site owners actually do take misbehaving ads seriously, and you'd appreciate that TCF club is something that can help the community here because we care about the people we've met and engaged with. There hasn't even been any classic thread drift in this thread, complaining about ads is actually on topic!

I bet if you look at the numbers there are a lot of folks over 40 that see the value of TCF Club and are signed up.

Same thing this morning. I can't get rid of them and it's preventing me from clicking on threads. What ad blocker do I need to install on my Mac to prevent these ads from interfering from my daily thread readings.

Thanks in advance.:)
As has been mentioned, ads keep the place running. I assume advertisers pay less when a large portion the audience is not seeing the ads. The trouble with turning on your ad blocker for the site, for a temporary problem like this, is it's too tempting to keep it turned on even after the problem is fixed.

They do try to keep ads under control. I tend to leave for awhile when things get really bad and a few weeks or so later when I come back order has been restored. Just about at that point now, some pages I can't see at all.

I am very aware of the option to pay to remove ads on this site, and I have always appreciated that option being available.

But the new pop-up garbage on the bottom that covers up forum content just strikes me as a totally unacceptable move to try and force more people to pay instead of live with the ads. My personal choice is to never just bend over and take it when something new like this is shoved out to make my life less enjoyable. I participate a lot here, but 99.69% of everything I post is to help others and answer their questions. I have enough experience that I am rarely asking for help with my TiVos in any way.

If I start avoiding this site because of more intrusive advertising, it will not be much of a loss TO ME. If the folks that run this site would prefer me to stay away, well, so be it.

I wonder if the recent onslaught of ads is actually Chrome, not TCF, since I also noticed similar "obnoxious" ads on other websites.
I am using Firefox, and this bottom pop-up crap that prompted me to post here this morning has NOT shown up for me on any other site with four different computers that I regularly use every day. So far, it is only here, and that I why I started this thread.

Interestingly, I haven't seen them here in the last 15 minutes or so since I logged on with this computer. Maybe it was a temporary thing that magically jumped in just for a short visit? Right...

SOMEBODY started it. I do not know who, and I do not know why, but it will be good if they have been removed. I do not particularly like the big banner ads on the top or sides of this forum, but I do not complain about them either. I will not tolerate the pop-ups that cover main content.
