Adding a channel that isn't in the lineup

I can't record off of channel 136 (was FX, now nothing after TIVO lineup screwup)

(After much thrashing, I came up with an easy workaround:
Go to Manually Record, slide over to the channel numbers and punch in the channel number you want, Tivo will add a new channel slot, if the channel number is not in the official Tivo/Tribune channel list. Then you can set the date and times, etc.)

I can "tune" to channel 136 with my TIVO (series 2 hooked up to a basic (300 series)) dish receiver, but when I press record - the TIVO doesn't. After I try again another time or two - it seems my TIVO hangs! Pressing the TIVO button - no response!
I pulled the plug and let it reboot and am looking here for advice...

Is there a way for me to add a channel to the lineup? - seems there ought to be a way for a customer to fix this, while I'm waiting for TIVO company to correct the DIshNetwork lineup, which they screwed up a couple of days ago. Yeah I filled in the official web complaint form - there's probably many in the queue at Tivo, since there must be 1000s of Tivo/Dish customers in the same boat - and more that will be pissed when they get an hour of shopping instead of the FX show they want to record this evening! (Because the channel map from Tivo now has FX at 137 but Dish is still sending out QVC on 137 - yeah I made sure I had the latest channel mappings from both TIVO and Dishnetwork on their respective boxes - TIVO got it wrong - they sent out a bad update a few days ago.)

this isnt a tivo problem it is a tribune media mistake I believe. you might want to contact them as that is where tivo gets their guide data
Tivo and Tribune issued a fix today. BUT still there is the question - how do I add a channel that is not in the lineup?
The way you used to be able to do it was to go to the channel manually and record for a few seconds. Then go to Settings and to the Channel List. The channel should be there for you to select.

Contact Tivo customer support and tell them about the lineup discrepancy. there's also a form on tivo.com.
(Yeah, I did the form and probably because someone noticed way before me, the problem was fixed before last night's prime time shows on FX.)

BUT - How do I add a channel that is not in the lineup?

Some have suggested:

1) "tune" to the channel manually - e.g. enter 1 3 6.
Okay, that part works on my TIVO+Dishnetwork setup

2) "press record" or "press select to record" --
PROBLEM, Neither of those works on my Series 2 Tivo.

Are any of you guys/gals claiming it works for you on your Series 2 standalone Tivo?
I'm running whatever the latest stock software it comes with + whatever updates it
has gotten automagically via the ethernet/Internet connection.

I get one of those popups saying it is working on it - but then nothing.
And after one or two or three tries (I don't remember) the TIVO goes into a state
where it will NOT respond to any remote commands - not even the TIVO button.
(Except I do see the LED flash that shows it is receiving some IR signals).
I couldn't find anyway out of this state except to unplug/replug the power cord.

So two bugs here:
1) Major annoyance and design flaw, IMO - If a channel falls out of the lineup, but the provider still has content on that channel number that you want to record - it seems you are SOL until TIVO/Tribune catches up, if ever.

2) Serious Tivo S/W bug - doing the sequence I describe - TIVO goes into a state where it doesn't respond to the remote.

And what exactly do you propose they do? Your channel didnt magically "fall out of the lineup;" someone at Tribune pressed the wrong button. Your tivo box doesn't know that. What do you expect from it?

This is not normal. You may have a bad sector in the system partition on the hard drive where the "record by pressing" routine is. Does pressing Record work on other channels?
1) Easy, provide an option on the my channels setup where you can add and name a channel that Tivo doesn't know about. For example, suppose my cable company turns on channel 99 with local government meetings and I want to schedule a recording ... BEFORE Tivo/Tribune gets around to adding it to the lineup. Seems a no-brainer - are the geniuses at TIVO trying too hard to make this idiot proof?

2) I'll have to try that again, but I'm pretty sure "record now" works for channels that are in the lineup.
OKAY, fooled with this some more - and tivo does allow #1, in a straight-forward, easy way - just not the way that others in these forum have suggested, this works for me, with any channel:

Go to Manually Record, slide over to the channel numbers and punch in the channel number you want, Tivo will add a new channel slot, if the channel number is not in the official Tivo/Tribune channel list. Then you can set the date and times, etc.
I just experienced the same strange glitch -- I tuned to a channel (Bravo, of all things, not a small channel) that had been strangely deleted from my lineup. I hit "record" and suddenly my tivo stops responding to ANY remote commands. It's basically locked up. What's this about?
Kinda good to know I ain't the only one that's seen TIVO lockup in this circumstance and that even the great Tivo still has a few bugs :(

But in the meanwhile, rest assured you can re-power your TIVO and set up a manual recording to capture your shows on Bravo whilst waiting for Tivo/Tribune to fix your lineup.
