Activating used HR10-250

I'm buying a used HR10-250 on eBay and it comes with an access card with a zero balance. I plan to replace my DSR6000 with this unit.

Which of the following do I need to do with the access card:

1. Move my DSR6000 access card to the HR10?

2. Use the used access card coming with the HR10?

OR

3. Buy a new access card from DirecTV for $20?

I'd like to know which path to plan on before calling DirecTV to activate. Thanks.

First try #1 and call to authorize and say you are replacing the DSR6000 with HR10. This way you should not be given a 2 year commitment. If CSR says no, hang up and call again.
When I replaced my HD receiver w/ an HR10, they tried to tell me I would have to buy a new access card. This is their normal MO. But I was very polite and he actually ended up just activating over the phone for no charge. They can do it but hiker is right. You may want to try another CSR if you don't get lucky on the first one.
I concur. I simply called and said I wanted to replace an existing D* tivo unit with an HR10-250, also bought on ebay with access card included. CSR asked for card and unit serial numbers from the unit and, presto, I was good to go.

So you used the access card that came with the HR10 you bought on eBay?

Does it really matter which card I use? Once I activate the HR10 and "deactivate" the old unit can I still watch any shows I have on the old TiVo or does it stop functioning altogether?
i did, indeed, use the card that came with the unit. at no point in time did the rep ask me for any information from the unit the HR10-250 was replacing.

from my point of view, by using the card that came with the unit, should you choose to re-activate the replaced unit, there won't be any need for a new card for that since it was never on any account other than yours.

YMMV

It's best to use the same card in your DSR6000 not the one that comes with the HR10. If you use the card that comes with the HR10 you might be given a new 2 year commitment which they probably won't even mention. You should be able to watch recorded programs on the DSR6000 even after it is deactivated.

I sold my HR 10 to my son, it was deactivated when I got my
HR 20 9/27/07. He has been with D since July 07, and has no DVR receivers on his account.

My son wants to watch a recording I made 9/23/07 on the HR 10
( Packer Game ). Can he just plug it in and hook to a TV and watch a recording without activating the HR 10?

Also, if he wants to activate the HR 10, What steps does he need to make??

Should be able to watch what is on the hard drive (wont be able to record anything new even from the over the air tuners) until activated

To activate he should call 800 number and tell them he bought it with access card and tell them that he wants to activate as people are saying sometimes they want you to get a new access card

Without activating, I've never tried it with HR10 but did try it with DSR6000 some years ago. IIRC, if you don't have the dish connect you will get a message after bootup when searching for satellite signal. Pushing DirecTV button should get you the main menu. You should also make sure that the access card is inserted and you might get a message across the bottom of the screen about the access card being expired, not activated, etc., but you should be able to view a recorded program.

To activate just call DirecTV.
Well I'm not too concerned about a new 2-year commitment since I just entered one 2 months ago when I got my HR20 and new 5LNB dish.

So the DSR6000 is a non-RID unit, correct? Will that card even work in an HR10-250? Still trying to figure out which way I need to go. Is the HR10 a non-RID unit or an RID unit?

The cards in my DSR6000's worked without problems when I transfered to HR10's. HR10 is a RID unit, DSR6000 is not.
OK, if I try and use my current access card from my DSR6000 do I want to deactivate it first or just pull the card and then call DirecTV and say the HR10 is to replace it and I have the card from my old "failed" DirecTiVo?
Don't deactivated the DSR6000. Setup the HR10 with sat cable, etc., insert card from DSR6000 and call to ask that the DSR6000 be replaced and reactivated with the HR10 using same card. It's best to have RID and access card ID written down but those are available on screen. Have CSR wait until you verify that a sample of channels (locals too) are viewable.
