I just wanted to let everyone know, I was racking my brain over which hard drive to buy for my new Tivo HD when it dawned on me, I have a (secondary) 500 gigabyte Maxtor drive in my computer.
The reason I never used it in my old HTPC was because it's LOUD. When it seeks I swear my entire PC case vibrates, it's just so loud.
So I read these forums and found the Hitatchi accoustical management tool.
I tried it out, and when setting down from 255 to 253 or lower, the drive instantly went silent.
I can't hear a seek now unless I open the PC case and put my ear to the drive itself.
*** This drive went from the loudest drive I've ever heard, to the quietest I've ever "not" heard. ***
So I did a full mfscopy and popped it in my new Tivo HD and it works great.
So, just to let anyone out there know who might have a LOUD drive they are not considering, try out the Hitatchi tool on it, it just might silence it and make it usable for your Tivo HD/S3.
