My Tivo is attached to a Netgear WPS606 Wireselss Bridge. It's all set up perfectly and I can access it via a DynDNS anytime I like.

What I can only do intermittently, however, is access it via a local 192.... address and I have no idea why! This includes Telnet and FTP as well as WWW.

I think the signal strength is something like 60%; last time I could check, anyway.

I can't even access the unit itself

I need to get in and change something fairly urgently so was hoping to be able to get telnet access via my actual IP address but of course that doesn't work; I assume because my router is hiding my PC from the world.

What do I need to do? Put my IP in the DMZ or something? Don't know much about networking (I have a Netgear WRG614 as my main router, btw.)

Well, we may as well go through the obvious.

Here are my settings; see how they relate to yours.

Router (Gateway)
IP 10.0.0.2
Subnet Mask 255.0.0.0

PC
IP 10.0.0.4
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Gateway IP 10.0.0.2

Tivo
IP 10.0.0.11
Subnet Mask 255.0.0.0
Gateway IP 10.0.0.2

Actually, I can see that the Subnet Masks don't tally, but they do work!

I guess the salient points are:-
Make sure all the IPs are in the same range
(the first three values should be the same)
All devices should have the IP address of the Netgear WRG614 set as their Gateway IP.

And there, I reach the limit of my knowledge.

Have you tried changing your Wi-Fi channel, and/or switching off any Bluetooth devices that you have? Also, was anybody using a microwave in the neighbourhood?

As well as Wi-Fi, I was using a video sender, and suddenly found bad interference on it. The interference pattern indicated a Bluetooth device in operation (bad interference in a noisy band across the screen), and I assumed that the device belonged to a neighbour. It's even worse if a neighbour uses one of the 108Mbps Wi-Fi networks, since they normally bind several of the available channels together, and sit in a fixed position.

I've now given up on Wi-Fi and the overloaded 2.4GHz band. I now use a mains-based Homeplug 200Mbps network, which is far more reliable.

For anybody interested in using a high-bandwidth Homeplug network, I can thoroughly recommend the Solwise 200Mbps Homeplug AV Ethernet Adaptors which, once they have been upgraded to the latest firmware on the Solwise website, are extremely good at coping with variable mains quality; which my previous Devolo 85Mbps adaptors were not so good at.

No you don't want to put your Tivo's address in the DMZ setting of your router. That just leaves it wide open to the World and you already have access from outside.

In fact your traffic doesn't travel through the router at all if you're accessing an internal device from another internal device - (except that your wireless access point is combined with your router - but hopefully you know what I mean).

So it sounds like a wireless problem- perhaps you could try a wired connection next time you have a problem - I bet it works fine.

Already done that and yes, of course it does. However, I don't want a 10m wire trailing up the stairs and across the living-room floor
