a case for buying a series 1 lifetime

without too much trouble you can find a series one with lifetime on ebay or craigslist for easily less than $100 (especially ones that don't really work), considering the significant discount you can get on subsequent boxes once you add them to your account, I wonder why more people don't do it..

A lifetime box has to dial home periodically to receive the discount on the second unit.

only if periodically is every 5 years

I think it's every 6 months.
even if it is every six months I can make a case for buying a lifetime series 1 with a dead modem and a turbonet card, add a slingbox and you have a nice little dedicated internet viewing setup that pays for itself in no time
If the series 1 is old enough, you can even transfer the lifetime service to another TiVo. Lifetime for $100 - not a bad investment.

never heard of the $100 trick, how old does it have to be?

Well, it has to be old enough, and you have to verify someone hasn't already used the lifetime transfer...
I thought I was getting such a great deal at two thrift stores! I found two Series 1 Tivos that I thought would be eligible to transfer the lifetime. But when I got home and connected them up to the phone line, the 'lifetime' field changed to 'call tivo for service'. Apparently the old owner had already transferred the lifetime.
Yep, it just bees that way sometimes. :)

This is a GREAT reason to just have the Tivo phone # saved in your cell phone, so if you happen to see a Tivo at a thrift store / flea market / Craigslist / whatever, you can just call them up and check the TSN right then and there. Obviously you're limited by their hours, but it's the only way to be sure what's really going on.

Also helps if you have some idea what the boxes are worth even without ANY sub - I got a Premiere XL for $42 out the door at a thrift, and it turned out to be eligible for my $199 lifetime upgrade, BUT it would have been worth purchasing even if I hadn't been able to verify TSN eligibility.

I think the harddrive in an XL is worth $42! nice find
I agree with you, but for series 2.
It was about $150 with lifetime. It plugs into a DTA to change channels, so its a great small box to tune the lower 100 with no cable card or outlet fee. Comcast gives two free DTAs, so this was well worth it for me. For those with a Series 3 or HD who sometimes have the need for a third tuner, this is a cheap way to do that.
