9.1 and Comcast Channel 1 - any fix/workaround?

Ever since it went to 9.1 (about a week) my TiVo S2DT likes to tune to channel 1 (Comcast onDemand) from time to time - If I catch it quickly enough I can even see that the program info on the TiVo ackowledges that it's tuned to channel 1 - so I know it's not the box flaking out and switching itself over there.

The problem is that the SA cable box ignores channel number inputs while it's on channel 1. The only way to get back to regular TV is to press channel-up, either on the set top box or on the cable remote. The TiVo can only send channel numbers so it gets stuck.

I've missed just about all digital cable shows since the box upgraded to 9.1 Instead I get the onDemand screen saver in place of the regular programming.

I've verified that channel 1 is not checked in Channels I Receive and I've rebooted the box a couple of times. Still the TiVo switches the cable box over to channel 1 at least once a day.

Can anyone recommend another course of action?

Mine goes to channel 1 via the LIVETV button... It's only been since this upgrade...
I wonder if it's possible to lock Channel 1 out from the cable box setup pages?
Clearing the "Channels I Receive" checkbox should be enough. It's not.
Finally, someone else with the same problem!!!! I'm not sure if you've reported it to TiVo, but I know I certainly am going to do so right now!

(As a side note, I thought that perhaps my wife was doing some sneaky channel changing behind my back... looks like she's off the hook!)
Bump and an update:

Last night I revised the "Channel Changing" settings to two digits plus Enter key (despite the fact that I only use the box for channels above 100). 24 hours later and the TiVo hasn't yet decided to tune to Channel 1. I've managed to watch 2 or 3 digital cable shows tonight that were recorded during the day.

I've set up some more recordings on various digital channels to occur overnight, so I'll know more in the morning.

For all I know it might have been sufficient to go back and re-enter the same channel changing settings as I originally had - I have no idea why the particular settings I've landed on would end up working better.
That didn't work. :(

The TiVo tuned the box to Channel 1 again, and happily told me so in its own channel banner.

It recorded all the scheduled shows and then tuned to Channel 1 some time between 2 AM and 7 AM.
An update from my end: I called TiVo (the number is available on the TiVo website) and they told me to remove the channel from my list.

I know you said it didn't work, but I figured I'd see what they had to say. Assuming I come home to Channel 1 again tomorrow, I'll call them back and say it didn't work!

May I suggest anyone else having the problem call TiVo as well? That way we can get a little paperwork behind this issue.
i've had a similar problem off and on since the 6.x software update and a corresponding comcast update to their motorola box... I changed the positioning of the IR blasters and it helped some. I still sometimes have the simliar problem if I'm watching something on my #2 tivo that's connected to this motorola box and the #2 tivo needs to start recording something. I can see the "large" older motorola box receiving all 3 channel numbers, but it seems as if it doesnt take the completely. I've done everything i could including finding a better IR code for the box. My #1 tivo has been using their small MOT DCT700 without any problems. I'm going to be swapping out the older box for the newer DCT700 soon and I feel my problem will be resolved since I have never had this problem on #1 with the DCT700.

(BTW - i dont remember what my larger comcast box model is.. but it actually has the channel number display on the front and looks very simliar to the DVR model yet it's not the dvr model.)

feel free to message me on this if you need more details. I'm not at home right now so I cant get the model of the old comcast box. But i can tell you the problem has existed with a S2-80, S2-40 and now the STD2-80

In my case the channel banner on the TiVo indicates that it tuned the box to Channel 1. No TiVo-box connection problem.
actually i would still be tempted to say that it still might be an IR code issue. you're using channels 100+ on the box. Think of it like this - when a recording ends - there is an actual IR command sent to "change" the channel back to the same channel (assuming there is not another recording starting immediately). In your case it's the numbers after the 1 that seem to be "missing" on both the tivo and the box. I did have problems with zeros at one point and some other numbers. The tivo was sending the code but for some reason was not changing the channel properly and somehow someway was actually showing up on the tivo and the box as the same incorrect channel. it sounds VERY backwards that an IR code problem could cause this but i think it is still the case.

Suggestion. Set some manual recordings overnight or during the day while at work. Set them at either 30min or 60 min intervals on one of the 100+ channels you dont actually receive but has that "not authorize" static screen- set it at lowest quality as well (this way it will use the least amount of space) Set it on 2 diff channels if possible - recording back and forth on each 30min or 60min interval. When you get up or get back home, then check to see what the box and the tivo are on. Then go back and fast forward through all the recordings. This way you can see if there is something actually going on with the channel changing itself or something else. This might let you track it down a bit more

BTW - i always remove channel 1 from my list of channels but the IR blaster sends the 01 (like doing it manually) then it will actually change to it

oh and i know this isnt a "fix" but might be a way to affect a work around - doesnt the kidzone stuff allow you to block a channel? I've never used it so i'm not quite sure exactly how it works

another thought just popped - if you're using both IR blasters on the box - it might be possible that the signal isnt being received uniformly and causing zeros to end up before the 1 instead of after or even not being received at all (thus making it just a 1). yes i know this should cause the tivo and the box to be out of sync on the channel it's on but ya never know

Go back and read my points. It's not an IR issue. An IR issue doesn't result in the TiVo "knowing" that the box is on channel 1. My TiVo "knows" the box is on channel 1 (until it eventually tries to tune the box away from Channel 1, which it can't do).

Channel 1 is unchecked. Verified, retried and rebooted.
Another update! I just got off the phone with Tivo, and here's what I've been told: the tech guy said that he had heard of this happening here and there, and that he believed it was something of which Tivo was aware.

Simply put, he said that it sounded like the IR tuner was dropping a number (such as you want channel 100 but it goes to channel 1). I know that this doesn't exactly fit the problem that it seems we are having, but I've tried the following anyway.

Here's what he's said I should try (and I've set my Tivo to do so):

UPDATE... What Tivo suggested below didn't fix it!!

Go to Messages & Settings > Settings > Channels > Channel Changing > OK > Answer cable box question > Advanced >

THEN... click on IR Code. Whatever your number is, keep it (click to the right for all 5 digits).

FINALLY... change the LETTER. If you're on B (which I had, and he said was the most typical), then go to A, which is slower.

As of me clicking "Post Reply," it's been set this way for 5 minutes, so I don't know if it works yet. But I'll keep you posted!

PS... he said it "wasn't a Tivo problem and wasn't from 9.1" I don't know that I believe that, but it's what he said.

UPDATE... What Tivo suggested above didn't fix it!!

I'll try what you're describing, but here's what just happened.

We were watching the news on BBC America (channel 114 on the cable box). At 7:30 the TiVo tuned the box to Channel 1 as I watched. The TiVo channel banner indicated that it understood that the box was now tuned to Channel 1.

I pressed Live TV to switch to the other channel, and it thought it was still tuned to Channel 114. So both tuners thought they were tuned to different cable box channels. Since the box was now tuned to Channel 1, selecting either tuner showed the Comcast OnDemand channel from the cable box.

This is not an IR issue.

Tuner 1 (sorry about the blur):

Tuner 2:

A dual tuner TiVo should never attempt to tune two different cable box channels at the same time, yet this is what mine just did.

My cable box is connected via serial cable.
Channel 1 is un-checked.
and I have found my tivo tuned to channel 1 (VOD)

Buckeye Cable - Series 2 DT
My dual tuner loves channel one. almost everyday i come home from work it is on channel one. I thought at first it was the cable company updating the SA box overnight but i have since witnessed Tivo change the channel.
Tech Support recommended the following:

Unplug the box for two minutes. Power up through the animation to the TiVo Central screen.
Repeat.
Repeat.
Immediately force a connection after the third power-up.

He claims they haven't had many return calls from people who have followed this procedure.

He also signed me up for the priority list for 9.2. Apparently it's coming out for Series 2 boxes now.
Definately let everyone know if the 9.2 update fixes the problem - if so - can you report both the bug on the 9.1 bugs list post and the fact that 9.2 does fix it on the 9.2 bug fixes post (both are in the HD area.

BTW I'm glad TiVo finally came to the conclusion that us S2 users to fix the bugs... as i'm dealing with a few of them daily

Kinda like clicking your heels together three time and repeating "There's no place like home"? :D
