Remember when you played four songs on a juke box for a buck? The selection was somewhat limited and you had to have a lot of quarters.

Now with Rhapsody, you can play 4 million in your living room for $12.95/month

For you youngsters who don't remember juke boxes, think of it as music on demand.

Music on demand is what differentiates Rhapsody from XM radio and other steaming services (also if you want to listen in your car, Tivo/Rhapsody isn't your choice).

A fixed monthly price is what makes Rhapsody different than Itunes.

Some might compare Rhapsody to a home cd juke box with 400 or so slots. I would guess that 400 cds would cost upwards of $4000 plus at least a couple hundred dollars for the player. At one time, I had 1000 cds and three players. Being an early adapter, the first player that had 100 slots :) set me back almost $1000 for the player. Later, I ripped all the cds to my computer. An improvement, but it still cost at least $10.00 for each new cd. Then I subscribed to Rhapsody and gave the cd players to Goodwill. The cds are still stored in my closet.

As I remember, for $14.99/month, you can download your picks to a portable mp3 player (but have to continue to pay$14.99/month to play them). Of course the mp3 player can work with your car radio, making it a better competitor to XM radio.

If you can't afford 13 or 15 bucks a month, don't like music, or don't care to pick your own tracks, Rhapsody probably isn't for you.

For everyone else, try the Tivo/Rhapsody implementation. It has a few bugs which I'm confident will get worked out. For some things, selection may be easier to set up from your pc, but playing is cool from the Tivo.

I have two problems with Rhapsody...

The first -- the big one -- is that it's from RealNetworks. Over the years I've learned to fully despise them at least as much as X-10 for their excessive pop-up advertising notices when using their products. While I've at various times purchased their various players, it doesn't thrill me whenever I feel I have to give them more money for something they have I need.

The second is that my musical tastes are pretty narrow and I own most all the CDs from artists of the era and genre I like so never feel that I need anything more, and as such rarely buy CDs anymore... It's easily been at least 3 years since I've bought any music CDs, probably a lot longer. And for when I simply do want something different, I'm not seeking out specific songs, so Sirius works well for me -- which I want for the car, anyway, so am already paying for.

Where I might actually have considered a service like Rhapsody would be if they'd not bill for any month it went unused (though it'd be nice to break it down a little more -- maybe into weeks). Then it'd be a ready resource when I felt the need without being a waste just to keep at the ready. But then, I suppose, if it was really all that important, I could just buy a song for $1 somewhere, too.

So in general, it's good that things like Rhapsody exist for TiVo; I don't begrudge them that. Some will no doubt find it compelling. But, like Roxio, seriously wish TiVo had better standards in partners.

Nope, paid something like 25 cents/3 selections, last I used one anyway.

I'll continue using my iPod and the tracks I "own" for free (and extremely portable), long term, as well as broadcast radio (free and extremely portable), and the music channels that come with satellite TV (not portable, being paid for already).

Besides, I don't think I can get Rhapsody in Canada anyhow.

If I want to pay more, I'll look at satellite radio first (somewhat portable), which I can get in Canada.

Huh? Exactly what does Rhapsody have to do with that?

Not to mention Rhapsody is over twice the price of the same service from Yahoo. Would be nice if Tivo gave us a choice between the two services and some real compitition. For a while there it looked like Tivo and Yahoo were working together. At least on Yahoo TV. Why not Yahoo Music?

I'm with you Barry on subscription music. I think its funny how many people are so opposed to music on a subscription basis... we pay for cable TV service, phone service, rent DVDs, and of course TiVo service so why should "music service" be any different? Guess we owe Steve jobs credit for that one, with itunes he has everyone convinced they must continue to own music even when physical media is obsolete. For me, listening to the same music over and over is like watching a movie more than once... I get bored. For those of us that constantly want new material subscription is the only way to go.

I haven't quite warmed up to Rhapsody yet because I have been a URGE customer since that service launched (for those that might not know... URGE is shutting down and merging with Rhapsody). It has been a painful experience for me moving to Rhapsody involving multiple installs and help desk tickets, but it seems stable now on my PC I am being patient and giving it a chance. I am looking forward to trying it on my new TiVo HD after it gets pushed to my box.

Now that I have a stable install on Vista and my media player is recognizing the DRM files, my only complaint with Rhapsody is the lack of the music discovery features that really made URGE so unique. The weekly playlists and similar music searches in URGE are really cool. I hope these features don't get lost in the URGE-Rhapsody "merger" and they surface in Rhapsody sometime in the near future.

Rhapsody does have a feature on the artists page where it lists the similar artists. I have found many bands that way.

I have been a Rhapsody user for a long time and can't imagine enjoying music without it. I haven't bought a CD in years. My whole family enjoys the service all the time. I have the regular subscription unlimited and get my mp3's by using ReplayMusic along with Rhapsody for my Ipod.

Like others have mentioned, it's not for everyone, but if you are vaguely a music fan, a music subscription service is the way to go today.

When you own almost every song you have any interest in purposefully playing, there's not a whole lot of use in access to a larger library, at least at a recurring monthly fee.
The world is full of things that I don't need or have a use for. I didn't realize that I had a problem with all of those things.

>>I'd rather use my own jukebox - a very nice Seeberg V.

(And yes, you can still get 45's). >>

Cool! I'd love to have one in addition to a service like Rhapsody.

Obviously, there are a lot of choices for playing music and that's a good thing. Also, TIVO owners seem to be very defensive about their particular choice.

Interesting enough the auguments and counter aurguments are similar to those discussions I've had with people who don't have a DVR (of any type).

Yep, another "scratch your head" move of inconsistency by the folks at TiVo. I could never figure out why they offered all of those Yahoo owned extras (travel, photos, etc...) yet they went with a direct competitor of Yahoo's LaunchCast streaming music by offering Live365. Now, they've done it again. Rather than offer Yahoo's music subscription service they've instead gone with a competitor.
