Will a Bolt (TE3) 'self format & index' a 3TB 3.5" HDD removed from a Roamio? I've purchased an 8TB RED+ and am debating the install in either a Roamio or maybe a Bolt using an external housing. If installed in the Roamio I thought the next project a 3TB adventure for the Bolt before doing anything greater.

I would wipe the existing Roamio partitions first just to be sure that it reformats. Roamios and Bolts use very similar drive layout, but it's not exactly the same. The Erase test in WD's Data Lifeguard Diagnostics works great.

Thank you - aside from that the Bolt won't care if the HDD is in the Bolt or an enclosure

Just make sure that the SATA data cable is plugged into the TiVo motherboard internal connector where the 2.5" hard drive was removed from on the one end and directly to the hard drive on the other end. Do not plug into the eSATA port on the TiVo. Do not plug into any adapter board in the external case.

I've not removed cover on a Bolt ever. Do I want a Right 90° or a Left 90° to exit straight out of the rear of the Bolt? I generally see 2 data cable with a male/female connection used between the Bolt and the external housing. Is there a particular reason? I had intended on as short as practical single data cable.

I would guess about 6-7 hours for a full erase on a 3TB drive, assuming that you have a USB 3.0 or direct SATA connection. The short erase test that only zeros the first and last sectors will wipe any existing partitions and only takes a few minutes, but a full test never hurts if you have the time.
