2 Units Sharing Tuners

Have a question. Probably a noob question as I've had Tivos for a few years now. If I have a Roamio and a Bolt on the same network will they "share" tuners if a conflict is detected on one box? Searched and couldn't really find anything.

No.

You can stream recorded or recording content between the boxes, but they are separate repositories. Further, there are ways to remotely schedule a recording on another DVR but there is no automatic conflict resolution mechanism that would schedule a recording on another networked DVR, either when the schedule is set up or when a conflict is later encountered.

Sure would have been a great feature (though I’d prefer the ability to add-in networked OTA or CableCARD tuners; plus user profiles).

I've been using a TiVo app to do this, as there wasn't an obvious way when accessing the other TiVo through "My Shows" -> Devices. What's the trick?
Assuming you have rolled your Bolt boxes back to TE3, see: Use a Bolt to schedule a recording on another box?

But since you said "Devices", I guess you have not. I'm not able to test TE4 right now.

Basically what @JoeKustra posted, pressing Guide when viewing a remote DVR's "My Shows" listing. You should notice the remote DVR name displayed when setting-up the recording.

Unfortunately, you'll need to use the standard procedure for adjusting a OnePass' priority.
This is something we've been requesting since they added network support to the Series 2. As they've progressed toward boxes with more tuners the likelihood of this happening has just gone down.

I am on TE3, using the Devices sub-menu by going Left from My Shows. This trick is kind of kludgey, but works also from my Roamio to access a remote Bolt. Makes me wonder if there might be a hidden trick to directly access the guide on the remote TiVo in order to bypass the Search step.

Another reason to just use the TiVo app.

Personally, I don't find it kludgy and it makes sense and fits into TiVo's way of doing things, once you're used to doing it.

Perhaps we're talking about different things. I like being able to access remote TiVos by going through MyShows and/or Devices. But hitting Guide then Enter and then Searching is a lot more work than just looking in the guide and hitting Select in order to set up a recording. It certainly isn't obvious, and probably not even officially documented, which is quite unlike "TiVo's way of doing things". Of all the back-door TiVo features, this certainly ranks among the most obscure.

Oh, I agree--it's a bit convoluted and I don't recall having seen this option discussed anywhere but here at TCF, but it's easy enough to do when you've done it a few times. :)

Note that while one can set the target box's show for recording through the search process on the local box, it also can be done totally through the Guide itself, which I typically do unless I think it would be easier to search:

TiVo Central -> My Shows -> Devices -> [choose the other box] -> [you should now be on the My Shows list for the other box, which should show at the top] Guide -> [navigate to what you want to record] Select or Record -> OnePass & other options [important: do not choose record at this screen] -> [you should now be at the show record screen for the show on the other box, which should show at the top] Record this episode (or other option you want).

It's kinda cool. It works well for me, where my boxes are all OTA and have the same channel line-up. When I played with this option a few years ago, there are different permutations--e.g. IIRC, if your local box has a different line-up than the target box, this only will work for the "common shows/channels," as you're using the local Guide to select the show for the target box.

Unless I'm missing how you're going about things, try this out--I think this is in the neighborhood of the trick you were looking for? :)

OK, that is much better. Not sure I'll remember it the next time I want to set up a recording on a remote box, since I don't do that very often. It would have been much cleaner if hitting Guide at the appropriate point simply took you to the guide on the remote box.

Is there a similar trick to access the To Do list on a remote box (I already know the "use the TiVo app" trick).

Just go through the process a few times, to get some (muscle memory) going --its only an extra screen/step. I haven't used the process for a year or 2, and remembered it (but I had to double-check it! ;) ).

Agreed that it could be simpler/more logical--but then again, I don't know that TiVo intended this to begin with. Maybe it's an Easter-egg-like feature that some bored engineer thought of years ago?

I don't know if there's a To-do list equivalent--that would be great! If I need to check for the downstairs TV/TiVo, I only know to do it through TiVo Online.

Just in case you're not familiar, the Advance button can be used to jump between the bottom and top of the My Shows listing, providing a quick means of navigating to the networked DVRs (and apps).
heck, they don't even share tuners on the SAME Tivo (e.g. for overlapping shows via padding on the same channel). They tried to do it many years ago but did it VERY poorly, causing a glitch when one recording stopped and the other started (e.g. 1 minute INTO the second show, if you added a minute of end padding).
