In the past I upgraded my DTiVo HDVR2 by adding a second drive to it. This is before I realized taht it really would have been a better idea to replace the 40GB with a bigger drive. <sigh> Hindsight is wonderful.

Now, after 6.3e, I'm having much difficulty with both of my DTiVos, and want to upgrade one of them, and see if it helps. I do not, repeat, do not want to lose my recordings, however. I'd rather cut off important body parts, because if I do lose the recordings, that's what's going to happen anyway. ;-)

So, say I go out and buy a big PATA drive - can I put it and the two drives from my TiVo into a PC, and copy all the recordings off of both drives onto the one, or can I only copy my A drive to the new one, and then I'm stuck with a B drive that I can't remove until all recordings are off of it?

If I can't do it 2->1, how do I get rid of the second disk without losing the recordings on it, later on?

And, in addition, I'd like to Zipper this beast, while I'm doing this. Zipper before this, or after I've migrated to the new hard drive?

You should be able to copy the two drives to one large drive using tools like mfslive.org. This would give you a size of approx the sum of the two drives. You may be able to expand to fill the new drive, but this might be harder.

I would get the change to the new drive figured out first before adding the zipper into the equation.

If you have original "A" + "B", you can combine 2 to 1 and keep your recordings using mfstools but you can't expand the capacity further.
So if your original "A" is 40GB and "B" is 160Gb, you can combine them to a new 200GB. That's it as far as expanding capacity currently.

I thought the new MFS let you expand more than once. Or is it the fact that I'm copying recordings?

WinMFS doeswhen it's a single drive setup but doesn't work on dual drive setup as of yet.

OK, how about this for a dumb idea - what if I take my 80 and 40, and combine them with MFStools, or WinMFS, into 1 160GB drive (I have one lying around). Can I then take that single drive with all of my recordings on it, and copy and expand it to a larger drive, or is it now fixed at the 160 reduced to 120ish?

Or is this just crazy talk?

Sounds like a good plan.

combine 2 to 1 using mfstools then use Winmfs->mfsadd to expand it.
