After just spending ~1 hour looking into this, I couldn't find one person who has successfully done this yet. But it's possible to do it if you're hardwired into your internet. Here's a step-by-step write-up on how to do it wired. If you're still confused, keep searching. The answers are there.

:edit: I can't post links, I forgot. Go to everything2 website, then in their search engine type 'tivo 401'. It'll be the last link. PM me if you can't find it.

Correct, you cannot do initial guided setup via wireless unless the TiVo has software version 7.2 (but you're not likely to find any of those in the pipeline yet).
I would figure the store bought tivo's would not have 7.2 software yet, but what about the buying it direct from tivo, would they have been updated yet?

Ah so at least I now know that with 7.2 software you can update 1st time with wireless :)

For me, this fact (the mandatory phone line for initial setup) is a REAL hassle.

I don't have a hard phone line (I get a cel phone from work) - this forces me to perform the guided setup @ a friend's house. I've had to do this twice. That being said, I've backed up my HDD after this guided setup so any restoring I do will be post-phone-line.

It's beyond a hassle, it's a problem. I am supposed to be receiving my new TiVo in the mail tomorrow (I'm a first time user), and I found out after researching yesterday that the wireless adapter I ordered with the TiVo won't work until the TiVo has been upgraded. So I did a lot more research and found that I can set it up using a supported wired adapter. Then today after purchasing a Netgear FA120 in anticipation of receiving my TiVo I decided to look up more info on my specific adapter, and many people have reported that they couldn't do the initial setup with the FA120, or that something has changed in TiVos shipped more recently that may have broken the ,#401 backdoor. I'll be more than a little angry if I end up having to take the brand new unit over to a friend's house to use a phone line. It'll be an inconvenience for me, them, and I won't be able to use it as quickly as I would if it were in my own home.

Am I to understand that after I have upgraded to 7.2 or higher, I will be able to complete the initial guided setup via a wired/wireless internet connection? Lets say, for example, I use a phone line to get the software up to 7.2 or higher and sometime in the future I have to do a complete "erase everything". Will I still be able to complete the "second" initial setup with my wired/wireless adapter?

Thanks,
Chris

Just a note if anyone cared, but my FA120 worked flawlessly for my initial setup, and I still have it hooked up and working today. Everything worked as planned! Thanks to anybody on the board who gave instructions on how to do this.

TiVo is even cooler than I expected, and I had high expectations.

You can't download the update until you have completed the guided setup. I guess you could do it through a phoneline and then clear everything... but why would you want to do that? The initial setup does nothing differently (that i'm aware of) if you're using a phone line or broadband. I would assume it takes a lot less time to use broadband.

I used the Belkin F5d5050 wired USB ethernet adapter and it worked fine. It has to be a USB 1.1 adapter. I tried the wired Linksys 200m and it did not work (supposedly the USB 1.1 100m will work).

I recommend getting the Belkin and entering the ,#401 dialing prefix and you should be good.

BTW I ordered mine directly from TIVO and received it Thursday 11/17.

It cannot be done wirelessly without the 7.2.1 software upgrade that is not shipping with the current run of TiVo Series2 boxes.

The guided setup CAN be completed with a wired USB adapter. I used the Linksys 100M adapter. What you need to do though is go into the phone settings and use COMMA POUND FOUR ZERO ONE (,#401) as the dialing prefix. And whammo! it works like a charm.

Puffy_McScrote,

I must whole heartedly thank you for your tip on the USB Adapter LINKSYS 100M and the tip of using the "," in front of the #401. I purchased a upgraded Tivo that was on ebay, upgraded to 180 hour for my Father and Mother In-Law. They, due to my recommendation did away with their land line about 3 months ago and got Vonage and are using Comcast Broadband. After searching stores that had the Linksys or Netgear adapters I ran across the 100M and bought it and have tried every code imagine and finally found yours. I entered the ,#401 for my dialing prefix and like you said WHAMMO....Again THANK YOU. Some may ask why did you not use your VONAGE setup...it does not work for some unknown reason...go figure.

I just ordered a referb Tivo and Tivo wireless adapter. Any chance you think they're shipping with 7.2.1?
Chances are more likely it will come with what software it originally had.
