(this is another 'is it tivo or is it cable box?' type question)
I have an original 40-hr Series 2 Tivo in my family room -- it's never been modded but it is wireless. Within the last couple of weeks, the channel changing has gotten so that I have to manually enter the new channel in order to change it. No more selecting through the on-screen guide. And even manually changing the channel doesn't always work - sometimes it stays on the channel it started on and you have to channel up or down to get it to recognize the channel it should have changed to.

I have the Comcast Moto HD non-DVR box hooked up to this puppy.

I tried looking for similar problems but didn't find anything. Is this a new bug or is my faithful Tivo dying on me? What should I do? I've re-run the channel changing tool 3 times now - is there anything else to try?

Make sure the IR blasters are correctly positioned over the eye of the cable box and firmly plugged into the back of the tivo.

Also, make sure that you don't have some IR interference in the room.

IR blasters haven't moved since I got the HD Comcast box, and they were working just fine for almost a year.

I don't think there's any interference (unless it's the Wii that's on the shelf below)? Any thing else I could try? Many thanks.

How do you know that? Did you check? Are they correctly plugged into the back of the tivo? Did you check?

Once you have checked this, if it still isn't working, try building a "tent" around the IR blasters/ cable box eye. I built one out of the end of a cracker box. This ensures that stray IR does not interfere with the link. Line it on the inside with reflective aluminum foil to ensure the eye receives the signal the tivo is sending.

So, the Tivo is on a tv stand with all other components, including DDs Wii. Wii and remotes have been on their own little tray since last Christmas, up until a few weeks ago, when she put the tray on the tv stand. When I posted my question, I had moved the tray to check the IR blasters and everything was working just fine. DD moved the tray back to play with the Wii (why she did this, I don't know). As soon as I took the wii-motes off of the tv stand, channel changing went back to normal.

That's right -- you guessed it -- the wii remotes being on the tv stand is what's causing the interference! I've had all kinds of remotes on this stand over the years with no problems. Even though the Wii and the remotes are powered off, apparently the wii-motes are so strong that they can still interfere. Wow.

I feel so ashamed...
