1 year 19.95 plan finished, called TiVo

So I checked my bills and I've paid 12 payments of 19.95. So I called TiVo to get my plan changed...

The rep was confused about the billing plans. Mentioned somthing about it going to 16.95/month. Also asked what it was prior to my getting this one and I told her I was paying 12.95 for the primary TiVo and that was the agreeement when I made the purchase. She put me on hold...

She didn't budge. Stuck to the party line. For me to not have a committment I have to play 16.95. Hold again...

Ok...She came back and told me that I have to wait until the 5th of October to make the change. If I don't make the change on that date I'll be dinged for 16.95 instead of the 12.95. I'm all paid up...this is rediculous.

At any rate I asked if I could just cancel my account and sign up for the 3 year and she said yes. WTF! She could have offered that to me knowing that I was going to have to change my plan anyway.

Anyway, I want to change my billing date so I'm going to call back before the next billing date to do this. What a pain in the ***.

Welcome to Tivo!

No one really knows what you will be paying, now, in a Year, 3 Years.

I am on the $19.95 plan and when I called Tivo the CSR's would not beleive it. I was told there is no such plan... lol.

Just pay $299 ($8.31 a month) up front and don't worry about your bill for 3 years.

And lock yourself into 3 years worth of service that you might not really get if your cable company opts to go in a different direction along the way. Yeah, that's a brilliant idea.

As opposed to the stellar service that DirecTivo users are getting from Tivo these days.

There's nothing wrong with the 3 year commitment - what is the cable company going to do to make a S2 stop working? Not give you a cable box anymore? Not likely.

The sub can be transfered to one of the S3 models (or any other model) at anytime.

Are you saying 3 years is a bad idea?
or are you saying three years of monthly is OK, but prepaying for three years is bad?

Do the math... If you take the $299 contract, the moment you pass 18 months, you're ahead of the game vs a $16.95/month contract. I think thats a worthwhile bet.

BTW, I had people at work who when I told them about TiVo in 1999 question me, "You paid $200 for a 'lifetime subscription' to something that may not be around in 2 years??" Eight years later I'm still running that TiVo S1 on that original fee, and it enables me to pay $6.95/month on my S3.

If you wonder why I didn't just swap the S1 over to the S3 with my grandfather clause, here's my thinking... The S3 (and TiVo HD) are the first generation HD/Digital TiVos. I'm convinced that within a couple of years we'll see a 2nd generation digtal TiVo that will handle SDV and even perhaps PPV and VOD and all the other schemes that cable will try to cram down our throats, and that's when I'll finally use my grandfathered lifetime.

SHHHHHH!!! i don't want to let TIVO know this, but I'm still paying 12.95/month and 6.95 for my second.

I want to get a TIVO HD but I'm scared that they will force me into one of the new contracts if I do that.

As long as I don't mess with anything, will mine get bumped up to the 16.95/month here soon?

Probably not. When did you start your Tivo? If you had an existing contract when they started the new pricing plans, you will pay $12.95/$6.95 for life. If you add a new box, you'll have to have a "new" plan on it.

First Series 2 was started in 2003, 2nd one in 2005.

If you are replacing one of your TiVos with the THD, then it will not affect your account. If you are adding the THD, then it will have to use one of the new plans (you will get the MSD price), but the other 2 will not be affected.

Right. For a box purchased at retail, you just go to the Manage My Account page on TiVo's website and transfer service from one of your boxes to the new one. Easy as pie.

I transferred my S2 service to my new THD online, and it continues at the $6.95 rate. And I never had to call TiVo.

If you buy a box with a rebate you have to pay the new prices with a commitment to get the rebate.

WOW: After reading this thread does anyone wonder why Tivo's subsciption numbers are plummeting? Tivo = Expensive, Tivo = Confusing and Tivo = Prison

Subscriptions aren't plummeting, so please don't be trying to spread ridiculous and false rumors...

It's more believable that the sky is falling.

It's be interesting to hear how many/few grandfatherable S1's are still out there that have yet to be grandfathered. You might have a rare asset there.

With them losing more customers they def need to work closer with the cable companies to release a TiVO STB. Maybe that will help them with those of us who own a normal tivo box and drop our subscription fees and not force us into these long term commitments.

There is no lock-in, practically.

The TiVo will always be usable,as long as you can feed analog cable to it, or hook a set top box with SD analog out.

Plus you can change the hardware on that plan, if your TiVo were to fail, or you want to upgrade to new hardware.
