Will "native" mode select 480i or 480p

I have the system connected to an analog CRT currently, but am considering a Sony 1080p display. I have a question about how SD programming will be displayed.

I notice that the Hybrid modes select 480p for SD programming rather then 480i. If I select "Native" will it pass through to the TV at 480i, or will it perform de-interlacing and pass it on as 480p.

If it leaves 480i alone, the sony has configuration settings to fine tune the SD image. If the Tivo up-converts to 480p the TV will not be able to tweak the image.

Can anyone verify that "Native" mode does output 480i unchanged over hdmi?

Native mode will output the analog channels in 480i. I would rather have my TV or external scaler do the deinterlacing.

I have an XBR1 1080p SXRD. I leave it at native, and let the TV do the work, and it looks great.

Native = native. The tivo will put out 480i over HDMI. Not all sets can accept 480i over a digital input but it sounds like your set will. (The hybrid modes are for those picky sets.)

As for which method will give the best picture, try them all and decide for yourself.

    This is good to know.

Since AbMagFab has an XBR1 I know this will work well for me. I pulled the trigger, and will be accepting delivery of a KDS-50A2000 tomorrow. I am looking forward to it.

For some reason all my music channels are 480p. All other channels except HD are 480i, in native mode.

Add Samsung to the list of picky brands that won't accept 480i over HDMI, thus ruling out "native".

Not all of them. My HL-S5687W takes 480i over HDMI just fine.

My Samsung does 480i over hdmi perfectly fine, and am using native happily.

Sorry for the over-generalization. I guess some do, some don't. The LN-S4692D (an LCD model) doesn't.

    Maybe it's DLP/LCD, I dunno - the HLS is a DLP, I don't know what jeffk has.

My Samsung HL-T5087 also does not work with HDMI and 480i. It says, "Source Not Recognized."
