Will a card in the same Tivo work after reformatting?

I got an old T60 with v2.5.2. I'm thinking of upgrading (actually a fresh install) to the last version 3.1.0C2, but I want to use a different hard drive in case I mess something up, then I can put the old drive back in and be good to go.

I have the light blue directv card, and will it work in a new hard drive with a new OS, then possibly be able to go back into the old drive & OS if needed? The card marries to my receiver serial # and not the actual OS, right?

Also, any major differences between 2.5.2 and 3.1.0C2?

The card marries the receiver, not the hard drive.
All the sub info is strored in the receiver.

    Mill Creek,...
Actually 3.5 is the latest version for the T60. Main difference from 3.1 was speed improvements.
