one other thing beyond the other things mentioned is that sometimes whatever check the tivo is doing doesn't match what they expect (e.g. the CC is messed up at just the exact place they check), so you might miss it on one ep of some show and have it on the rest of the episodes.. or I also see on talk shows often the skip for the last major segment is missing (I mean before the musical guest, not the commercials-then-very-very-very tiny "segment" saying goodbye)..

Days Of Our Lives has never once had Skip.

I just got off the phone with TIVO asking about “skip” missing for General Hospital. (I didn’t see this thread until after I called). They had me go through their normal hoops of connecting, rebooting, etc. All I wanted was an answer on why did they stop it for this show because I have proof on my box from older recordings that skip used to be on this show. They first said skip is only available on shows recorded after 4pm ET. Then they told me it has to do with the network not allowing it. When I confirmed that it used to be available on this show based on my recordings list, they then told me they were sending me an e-mail with a link where I could send in a request for this. They would not send this request to the back office on my behalf for some reason.

Maybe the commercials are better than the programming? :)

Maybe they didn't want to be laughed at?;)

Hulu has GH without commercials, but Hulu is a subscription service, and they only keep about a week worth of shows.

It really pisses me off that we lost skip on GH and nobody at Tivo gives a crap...but it's Tivo so what else is new.:confounded:

It could just be, under TiVo's variable system for adding skip to a show, there just isn't enough comparative demand (i.e., viewership); and, it's not in the TiVo default time period for skip. Sorry--

It is interesting how our exceptions change as technology makes our lives easier. It was mind-blowing in 1978 when I shelled out $1200 for a Betamax VCR and was able watch some TV shows whenever I wanted, and watch them again without having wait 6 months. I even created my own series collections and record movies off HBO before there were movie rentals. The VCR was a total game change. Fast forward to 1999, WOW... there was Tivo where I could store everything on a HDD and my VCR only got used for playback. Able to store 100s of recording without swapping out single tape, and zip past 3 minutes of commercials in less than 30 second.

I love the Tivo Skip, but if they were to remove it, I wouldn't miss it that much because only about 25% of the shows I watch have it. Now, I just hate the new UI, and could rant about it for along time, but I shall spare everyone. But if the original Tivo came with it, I wouldn't have any perspective to evaluate it, thus would have considered it perfect.

I agree with you about the new UI. I had almost gotten used to the new navigation and they made more changes just recently. I guess I just wish they would prioritize open cases where something isn’t working properly, like the one I opened for closed captioning that is messed up on one of my channels (reported 6 months ago) over minor tweaks they make on the UI (which make things an aggravation for us until we can get used to the new button sequencing we need to now follow). Like you, I don’t have a problem with the way the UI currently functions, it is just different than what they originally gave us, so there is a learning curve associated with it. I guess I just had to rant on your behalf- :)

True - but I don’t think they should give us the feature and let us get used to using it for a given show, and then take it away for that show. It would be different if we never had it to begin with.

I'd like to understand better why not all shows have the Tivo skip? Are some showed encoded somehow that mark the end of commercial break? If not, how are they detecting the end. My experience is that is pretty damn near perfect, never under or over shoots the end point.

In my understanding from these boards, skip points are manually noted by TiVo, but, from a technical basis, use the closed captioning embedded with the show.

If a poor signal impacts closed captioning, then that would be one reason that skip mode is not available.

Actual people do the time coding, which is why the accuracy is as high as it is. AI like other companies use isn't as accurate. So to control costs they tend to limit it to the 4 PM to midnight timeframe on the most popular channels/programs.

Sometimes it steps outside that boundary, especially if a program is a rerun or in syndication that Tivo has already tagged.

They had started kicking around (publicly) the idea of crowd sourcing skip.

I can see that--it's certainly frustrating enough when an episode of a "regular" primetime show gets missed from skip. Dashed expectations . . . .
