They did the same thing with the S3 when it came out. The THD "branch" came off the code tree before 8.3 was released, and devloped seperately. The next undate that comes out for both should get them on a common baseline again.

The 8.1.x software TivoHD has most of the new features found in 8.3.x.

As far as I can tell, it is only missing the indexing changes. It still indexes and searches every channel in your OTA and cable lineups, regardless of whether or not you actually receive them. It hides the results for channels that you have removed but it still searches them.

With 8.3.x, only the data for the channels you have checked is indexed and searched. This dramatically improves responsiveness with the guide and searches.

Don't forget the eSATA in 8.3! That will be nice for THDs.

Before they merge the branches....they absolutely need to resolve the stablization issues with the TiVOHD branch first before merging them back as well.

I am sure that they are referencing and using a lot of the pixelation/macroblocking code that they developed with the original S3 updates.
