Could I please have the image as well? The drive on my TCD648250B just died and I would like to install a larger drive.

just had what I believe to be my drive fail in my TCD648250B series 3 Tivo. I need a copy of an image also. I also need the WinMFS version that will allow me to format it and apply the image. I've read several posts saying 1TB is the max, but others say 2TB is the max. Need to know what drive to buy and what software to use to format and install the image.

2TB is the max, recommended is WD10EFRX or WD20EFRX.... The capacitors may need to be replaced, check them out if you can.
    (No formatting is required.)

    Thanks.
Just for giggles I checked my Drive I suspected was bad. It mounts in WinMFS and I can see it. I used the Backup option from the file menu. Seemed to work.
Does this mean my drive is not actually bad?
Suspect perhaps the Powersupply Capacitors? You mentioned checking them out. How do I tell if they are bad and need to be replaced? I examined them. they all look normal except one. It is slightly bulged. Would that cause my problems? And a single capacitor replacement might fix my problem?

Its recommended that all capacitors be replaced, as they are aged and just looking, you would not be able to tell if its bad or not.

What make/model is this drive? Recommended is the WD Red WD10EFRX (1TB) or WD20EFRX (2TB) max.

    :( Need TCD648250B (Series 3) image too.
I'm glad this community remains vibrant!

My original and upgraded copy (1TB WD Caviar) have bad sectors. Now I'm trying to use a 1TB 7200 Seagate Baracuda or Constellation ES.3 because those are the drives I have on hand. I hope they are compatible, even if power hungry.

I tried to start a factory reset on the old upgrade, but it hangs with 4 lights and gray screen. After using MFSTools 3.32 to copy the upgrade to the Baracuda... it does the same.

No, you cannot use those drives as the puny power supply cannot Support them. they must also be 5400 rpm.

Recommended drive is wd10efrx or the max 2tb wd20efrx.

I'm trying to beat the cable company, who will install tomorrow morning. I'm aiming to have something online to activate. I'm considering formatting/imaging the WD Caviar (has bad sectors) or the 7200 if I have to, then replacing with a new recommended drive next week.

BTW, I had the TiVo off for 2 years when I had switched to DirectTV, but now I get to go back to a nice PVR!

I guess you would have to cancel the cable tech then. The drives you mentioned does not work and will do things like all lights on/blink, no boot, etc.
You may have problems if it does not update the software to the current (S3=v11.0n.k1, Premiere at least v20.7.4). It would not find any channels otherwise. Since it also has been off for several years, the guide is outdated and can time out when it tries to clear (error s02/s03). You should not do Guided Setup until its been updated.

    PVR? Tivo is a DVR!

Could I get the image for TCD648250B?

(Also, thanks for the advice & warnings of using the power hungry drives. That could have been a disaster!)

Interesting how the market speek changed from "Personal Video Recorder" to "Digital Video Recorder". I was far-too-subtly pointing out that TiVo is better than any other "we've got a DVR too" out in the market like the DirectTV DVR I'm finally getting rid of.
