I have come to the obvious conclusion that we are a bunch of geeks :)

We have these HUGELY long threads on these bastions of geekdom:

    BSG
    Dollhouse
    Buffy
    Doctor Who
    Lost
    Heroes

And even our sticoms tend to favor:
    Big Bang Theory
    Better Off Ted

Most of these shows get low to middling ratings, yet the threads are long.

And there's hardly a thread for these popular shows:
    Grey's Anatomy
    Desperate Housewives
    Two and a Half Men
The CSI series (which is moderately geeky, but still a cop show)
    L&O series

Now I know that the SciFi and action shows lend themselves to much watercooler talk. But even with that, read many unrelated threads and you see references to obscure characters in some of these shows that leave me scratching my head that anyone would even know....The talk of a Balek in the Better of Ted thread is one example, yet it appeared that a lot of people knew what that was.

Anyway, I just thought it was interesting. Your thoughts?

Is January 5 too late to close out nominations for the 2010 Most Glaringly Obvious Statement of the Year Award?

Yeah, but those ratings don't pay the bills :) The one thing geeks do is spend money on high tech gadgets.....I hope that plays into advertising rates somewhat and is the reason some of these shows have gotten a second and third chance...

I never use bittorrent for video (though I do use it occasionally for live concert recordings). Although the numbers reported are impressive, I think it would be very hard to determine "most downloaded" anything. For applications that offer tracking such as bittorrent, ftp, and maybe irc, usenet statistics would be very hard to track without all providers giving up that information. I don't see that happening.

You forgot to mention some of the highest rated shows on TV, like NCIS, NCIS: LA, and The Mentalist.

I agree that we're a bunch of geeks. But you could also make the point that most of these procedural type shows just don't have anything to talk about on a weekly basis. The story is presented and wrapped up in the same episode, whereas most of the shows that get lots of play around here are serial in nature and people come here to discuss the ongoing storylines and the recent developments.

When I said these shows lead themselve to watercooler talk I inferred that the other types of shows don't. Anyway, what prompted me to post this, was that pretty much every thread I read, whether it's for a "geek" show or not, always seems to reference someting in one of the "geek" shows. Someone always says, "That reminds of me of some plot I saw on DSN", or "so and so from Firefly is going to guest on CSI". And it seems to be assumed that everyone in the thread is going to get it. As I don't normally watch most of those shows, I feel like I'm left out of the party LOL.

In the first list the only show we don't watch is Big Bang Theory but I have been thinking of trying to catch up on DVDs.

I do like Desperate Housewives but I'm way behind, haven't finished last season. Used to watch 2 and a half men but it just got old.
