Doesn't TiVo Desktop have the needed codecs and whatever included but not activated (though you can get them elsewhere), and when you pay for the Plus key, they get activated?

I thought that the codecs were part of Windows 7, but not 8. I thought I read here that that was why TiVo stopped supporting it.

Exactly, Win 8.x needs an additional Media Center pack from MS or a 3rd party application to supply the MPEG2 decoder.

The codecs that Plus enables are in the TiVo\Desktop\Plus\MainConcept folder even on the free version, but they won't run without a license key. If you go to MainConcept's website and check out their license fees you'll see that TiVo negotiated a great deal.

In Windows 8 you have to have Pro and the Media Center add-on license. Windows 7 included them in everything except Home Basic.

Exactly, because Plus added the missing CODEC to the mix, this whole thread has said basically the same thing, you were missing the MPEG2 decoder/CODEC

What I was getting at was "wouldn't it be simplest to pay for Plus instead of having to hunt around for what you need elsewhere and figure out if you can trust those sources?".

Granted it's a few dollars more than "free".

    Simplest doesn't mean best.

In this case it was the last solution tried because it worked so I guess it was best for the OP. It certainly isn't the best option for me. Personally I don't like paying for something if I can get it legally for free.

I am updating to Windows 10 and I understand Windows Media Player is not available for Win 10. Is there another player that will work. I've been happily transferring .tivo recordings to my notebook for years with Tivo Desktop Plus and playing with WMP but it appears this will change. Will I need something like Direct Show Dump or KMTTG or is there a stand alone player that will play them?

It's Windows Media Center that was removed, totally different product than Media Player, Tivo Desktop Plus already has the missing CODEC that Win10 doesn't come with, nothing will change in the OP's scenario.

I upgraded to Win10 and found I couldn't play DVDs or TiVo Desktop Plus files.

I downloaded VLC, which now lets me play DVDs, but when I open a .tivo file, it's heavily pixelated (like viewing scrambled cable channels in the old old old days) and no sound. How can I fix this?

    Thanks!

I've read that reinstalling Desktop+ fixes the problem. But I'm not using Win 10 yet.

Uninstall Tivo Desktop and re-install it.

Unfortunately, uninstalling and reinstalling did not help. :/
