That must be the remote you are using and causing this confusion.

Of course, you can replace the disk with a new image or even larger then the original, up to 8TB.

I don't need that TiVo. The only point to fixing it would be to sell it. I don't have the disk image I'd need, so I'd have to spend some money to acquire it. That would make the whole transaction uneconomical.

Incorrect. The only cost is for the new drive. The image you can get from these forums, search for DVRBars, which is the program, that restores the newer image. Then MFSTools 3.2 will help to expand to the new size.

The cost for this Premiere update, is only the new drive and your time/work.
A WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB drive is only about $120. You do not need to have it update to Hydra, Just v20.7.4. Does it have lifetime service? That would make it more worthwhile.

You shouldn't definitely see the difference in the UI between TE4 and TE3. :)

I've downloaded those two programs. As I'm using a Mac, I'll need to run them under VMware Fusion and put the disk into an enclosure.

The instructions I found say "Connect a TiVo drive to your computer." Does a blank, new disk qualify?

That TiVo (a Premier XL) does have lifetime service. eBay shows that model as going for $175-450. I'll have to decide whether the cost of the disk and shipping vs. the eBay sale price makes it worthwhile for me to repair it.

Yes, it has to be blank.

Is there any way to prevent or trigger an update from TE3 to TE4? Before I've transferred all the items from the HD XL to the Roamio Pro, I'd like it to stay on TE3. But after all the transfers are done, I'd like to get the Roamio Pro to update to TE4 so that I can transfer its items to my iPhone. Thanks for any advice.

There should be an app on the Roamio TE3 to "Get New Experience". That's how you get TE4.

Why does the Roamio Pro need to be on TE4 to allow transfers of the shows to your iPhone?

    TE4/Hydra would reduce transfer capability.
I think we forget to mention how to tell what version the Tivo is running... Under Settings / Help / System Information (for TE3)
TE4 it would be a similar location for System Information.

You should not need to update to TE4/Hydra to have the transfer capabilities, but on contrary, you may lose it.

You would not lose much of anything on the Tivo when you "upgrade" from TE3/v20.7+ to TE4/v21.7/21.8+/Hydra. But, you would lost everything 'downgrading' from TE4 to TE3.

Interesting. My iPhone can see the content on the Roamio Pro even though it appears to be running TE3. Given my experience with the HD XL I presumed that TE4 on the Roamio Pro was necessary to download from it to my iPhone.

I just initiated a transfer of two items on the Roamio Pro to my iPhone. However, when I tried to initiate the transfer of a third item, it told me that "Streaming this channel is not available at this time. Please try again later." What could be causing that?

The Roamio Pro shows 20.7.4, which would be TE3.

Don't know. The message seems odd given you state you're trying to transfer a recording. You may want to research that specific issue further or start a new thread focused on just that.

What's the best way to do that? Perhaps I'm looking in the wrong place, but I haven't found a lot of explanation of TiVo errors.

I tried that three times on the Roamio Pro. It went through a series of steps, but when it was done it was still running TE3. The second and third times those steps showed as already having been completed.

Finally, I decided to try to restart the TiVo unit. That launched a long-running process, after which it was running TE4. I'd have thought that if a restart was needed, the "Get New Experience" procedure would have caused that to happen without requiring me to do a manual restart.
