I posted this in the DirecTV Tivo forum, but figured I'd post here.

My current Hughes SD-DVR40 is dying (the box, not the hard drive itself) and I'd like to move the hard drive to a different Hughes SD-DVR40 which I just purchased off of Ebay. Actually it's a SD-DVR80 but that shouldn't matter since the drive is the only difference, and that's getting removed.

I looked at this thread and it indicates that the recordings are married to the motherboard, thus I can't move the drive over.

this was also 4 or so years ago since the posting was made. Has anything changed (new software, etc) so I can bring this 250GB hard drive over to the new (identical) box? Or do I have to start from scratch again?

    Thanks
    -Mike

    Nothing has changed.

If your recordings are important, and the DVR cannot play at all (so you can copy them with A/V to a DVD recorder or capture card in your computer), you would have to move the TiVo crypto and any DirecTV identification chips from your DVR to the working one.
