My mother in law has the older single tuner 40 hour tivo on a $6.95/mo retention plan (month to month - no contract)

We wanted to get her the newer 80 hour dual tuner model.

Can we simply buy the newer model, log into the website and change the tivo service number without changing her monthly fee/no contract status?

If you do that you will not get a rebate. The rebate is what, $170? You'd be better off taking the 3yr commit and getting the $170.

Not if they manage that Big Lots deal that was going on. Not sure if the sale is still going on, but $70 for a S2DT was a nice incentive to upgrade my old 240

That is a good idea, I think.

am i correct in thinking that you cannot transfer a lifetime single tuner series 2 to a dual tuner series 2 for free?

Correct. Lifetime service cannot normally be transferred from a S2 box to another (other than an RMA replacement of a defective box). Sometimes TiVo will have special offers allowing such transfers (for a fee) but there is no such offer currently.

Same deal for S1 to S2 units? No lifetime transfers? We got my in-laws an S1 6 years ago w/lifetime and they are about to move off of it to get their cableco DVR to get dual tuners...it will just sit unused....

There is a cutoff date, and if you activated lifetime on a Series 1 unit (not an integrated DTiVo unit, only a standalone) prior to the cutoff date, then you get one free transfer of the lifetime service to a different box. (This is because, at that time, the rules did not clearly state that "lifetime" meant the lifetime of the unit rather than the lifetime of the user.) I believe the cutoff date is January 20, 2000, but I'm not 100% sure -- if your boxes are that old, search around and I'm sure you can find the exact date. If you qualify, I believe you can transfer to either a Series 2 or a Series 3 box -- but you can only do it once.

Yeah, I have a S3 and would like another DT not necessarily HD only because I do not want to have to rent more cable cards. Not worth buying for me, but definitely would upgrade if I could just buy a DT box and get the sub transferred. Not a huge deal but I would do it.
