That's true--how many blinking 12:00 VCRs are still out there. ;)

(Although, I take that as an inherent laziness in people--really, it generally isn't hard to change the time on devices, it's just "one more thing.")

That. doesn’t. make. it. acceptable. With my cable company, while I may see ads, I also didn’t pay hundreds of dollars for the unit itself, on top of the monthly fee, like I did/am doing with TiVo.

None of the DISH receivers have ads scattered throughout the guide as you page thru it, ONLY a small ad at the very bottom of the screen, which is actually NOT part of the 8 lines of EPG.

    THIS!

I think back in the early days of digital TV Comcast used to throw some lines of ads on their grid guide that was annoying but and shortly after I switched to Moxi then TiVo. I don't think X1 has any ads...

Not sure what guide you had back then, but I STILL have a legacy Moto DVR with the old I-guide that I've had now going on 10+years, which Comcast is NO longer providing any updates to. The only line of ads on it, is a single one underneath the 4-line grid guide...but there are not & never have been any ads within the grid itself. (one thing I like about I-guide :) )
Sorry, unfortunately it does, similar to what DirecTV does on it's grid guides. Fortunately, they don't seem that intrusive & only seem to appear periodically as you scowl thru the guide. (I'm sure others may differ on that opinion) :(

OK it’s been so long I couldn’t remember exactly where the ads were on that Moto box but I’m guessing mine was just like yours. I don’t recall seeing ads on X1 when I test drove it for a day but maybe just didn’t use it enough.
