Yeah, I agree, it's a total longshot on the kickstart. I am willing to play around on the S2 so I'm trying it; if/when it doesn't work I'll try to escalate further with TiVo rather than risk the DT.

    Assume I'm a computer idiot. How would I investigate/resolve #2?

Also, do you folks think I'm at the point it's reasonable to PM TiVoJerry and politely point him to this thread and beg for his insights/help?

You investigate number 2 first by using your phone line.

I think at this point it wouldn't be rude to reach out to them. You've used 2 tiers of support and have received an answer that makes very little sense.

Well, kickstarting accomplished nothing at all.

I found all the parts of my wireless phone jack and set it up again, but it isn't working very well (TiVo can't connect with it, and I'm not surprized -- I plugged in a regular phone and the connection was very staticky) so I am going to hunt down a superlong phone cord and try that today.

I have seen the S02 error before, on a Series2 box that I was trying to update. It turned out the box did not have an active service account. As soon as TiVo fixed the account, the update was successful. This doesn't sound like your problem, but maybe there is something set incorrectly on your account? With both boxes doing it, it must be connection or account related.

Great news! Using my new 50-foot phone cord, I have achieved a successful connection and downloaded the new software. Took almost 2 hours to download and load, but it worked! Woo hoo! You can't see me but I am doing a happy dance. :) I've restarted and it's installing the new software now.

Hopefully I can switch back to the network and it'll be able to make its normal daily calls OK.

Off to do the other one . . .

Thank you SO MUCH to everyone who has posted in this thread trying to help me, I really appreciate it. You guys are awesome. :)

(Also, I am wondering: Is this a fluke or does it signal some sort of problem with my network that I need to address?)

    . . . and my woes continue.

The DT is set up and running 9.1. But it can't make its daily calls over the network anymore. They are still failing with the S02 error. From the short length of the download I can tell it's just a daily call, not another attempt to upgrade. It's the same as before -- completes downloading, prepares to load, then fails with the S02 error.

The S2 is even worse off -- it cannot connect over either the network or the phone line. Attempts over the network give the S02 error. Attempts over the phone produce "Service not answering," or, more rarely "Call interrupted." I've tried all the call in numbers in my area code (there are only 2) and it's the same result. (This is the same call in that the DT was able to negotiate successfully, so I think we can rule out an actual problem with the TiVo service not answering.)

 :( I don't know what to do. I can't leave the DT plugged into the phone line all the time. And there's only a few days left worth of guide data on the S2.

Is this a problem with my computer network? Can TiVo even help me with that?
I don't have strong computer skills and I don't have any idea how to go about troubleshooting it. My internet seems to be working just fine.

HELP! What should I do now?

Well, it appears I have a computer problem, not a TiVo problem.

I figured, I must have a virus or something, I will update and run every spyware, etc. program I can find. But I CAN'T. I can't seem to download ANYTHING of any complexity properly. It can't read update files, it can't read installation files. They arrive with corruption problems.

CRAP. I have no idea what to do now. But I guess it's a happy hour problem, not a help center problem. Off to start another thread . . . .

All my issues appear to be resolved! My computer and TiVos all are functioning correctly.

    I needed a new router.

Many, many thanks to Billy66 for a whole bunch of above-and-beyond-the-call-of-duty tech support. :)

    Yay!

I got to this thread too late, but I've usually found my "problems" with the network download to be something relating to the router. For example, you might have great signal strength, but if the WEP key is wrong (the Tivos and the router don't match) that can cause problems. Or you might have great signal but your DHCP gave you an adress that is used somewhere else. Rebooting the router and chacking all of the DHCP and security settings on the wireless end has helped me. Glad it was something simple like the router.
