Why? That's not what this thread is. It's Greatest TV Series, not Greatest Dramas. This list can (and should if appropriate) shows like American Idol or Survivor, or heck, even Keeping with the Kardashians, if those are among your top 5 (not mine, but it might be somebody's)

    Apples and Oranges.

It's a personal thing, but i don't see how you can compare comedy with drama with reality, etc. They have different criteria, IMHO.

I could make a list that includes Only Fools And Hordes, Fawlty Towers, Line of Duty, Red Dwarf and many others that most people have never heard of, but for me, they're close to the top of any list of excellence.

You make your list the way you feel is best and I'll make mine, OK?

Of course, and if your Greatest TV Series list is all dramas, that's fine :)

BTW, please include those shows you mentioned. As I recall you grew up in the UK, there's no rule that says that TV shows on the list need to be American shows or even shows that anyone has ever heard of (in this country) :)

FWIW, I have heard of Fawty Towers.

Two and a Half Men in Charlie Sheen years is probably my favorite comedy sitcom. The only one I've watched twice through.

I adored M*A*S*H, but it was almost two shows (one comedy, one drama).

I'll see your Green Acres and raise you one Petticoat Junction!

Yes! I'd really love to see a modern-day Rockford Files -- not a copy of the original -- but equally as good and creative. But maybe the era of "old school" PI work has passed with the advent of modern information technology. But I think there's still room for intsa-print business cards in the Firebird.

Also, folks, please sell me on "The Wire". My wife and I started watching this twice, and never really got past the first two episodes. Just seems like another "cop show."

And what list of best TV shows would be complete without "Hello Larry!" :D

There's too much history I can't do it in 5. I'd need two different categories (sitcoms and action/drama) of 10 each. Then I'd have to want to spend 10 hours coming up with the exact lists.

Clearly Hooterville was ahead of its time.

Petticoat Junction and its hooters were replaced by the Mary Tyler Moore Show. I wrote an article about that somewhere at the time. America had changed; it's idea of what made an interesting woman had started to change. Whatever time Hooterville was ahead of, that time was dying off. We may have been watching its last desperate gasp for breath play out in the national consciousness over the last few years.

It would be so much easier if this were TEN favorite shows - then I could have included St Elsewhere as well as Downton Abbey, Newsroom, Sopranos & LA Law.

I chose Top 5 because I wanted to force folks to choose the very best of the very best. No rules - any genre, any era, any country... Just what you consider the 5 greatest. Been some interesting responses.

Kind of amusing. I bet if this poll was done a few years ago "The Walking Dead" may have made several of these lists, but now it's AWOL and for good reason.

Mary Tyler Moore show! I loved that at the time, but forgot all about it. Ditto St. Elsewhere and Mash.

    1. Lost
    2. Game of Thrones
    About 25 shows tied for 3, 4, and 5. ;)
