The down side is that we don't get to laugh at his ridiculousness any more. That guy was a train wreck.

I don't know the details, but Ted Allen has his own show, Chopped. Unless that show gets cancelled I think his contract might forbid him to be on another cooking competition show.

I think the greater loss is that it appears Anthony Bourdain isn't going to be a judge anymore. He's got another show The Layover on the Travel Channel.

Well, I think there is some planning there and manipulation in the way they set the whole thing up. There is no doubt in my mind that they will cast exactly the number they set out to cast. There will be one or two slots left for the bubble people.

I imagine that ep 02 is set up to do the third, and last, group, then the bubble group. Starting with ep03 it will be business as usual. I don't mind this, as it is the way Ramsay does Master Chef and it's kind of interesting to see the trainwrecks vs the good ones. I also like getting to see that little bit of one-on-one time with them because, when there are so many, I just can't tell them apart. Plus, I did love seeing jerkwad get the boot w/o even getting to cook. He thought he was so smart with his response about slaughtering (yikes) the butchering job.

I got my fill of laughs, then smiled when he got the boot right away. That was great.

Why even offer to butcher the meat if you've never done it? That's just asking to showcase your failings.

He thought he was a bad ass. He stated he could cut up stuff better than anyone else there.

"culinary artist" must be what you call yourself when you don't have any official accolades.

That was pretty funny! By the time the third person, in a row (!), said it I was saying - really?

I think the last person said it as a joke.

Reminds me of Subway's "Sandwich Artists". I also thought the last person (I thought there was only 2, though) said it as a joke.

Glad its back. This beginning format is OK. Looks like it just adds two or three weeks to the season.

One screw up and your gone. Will the have a second "Redemption Kitchen" chance? ;)

That seem to be a whole separate on-line show for those sent packing. I guess one of then actually gets back into the real show late in the season?

After getting past that, there still isn't much to see. Just a short promo for the web show.

    I didn't mind the format.

I can't decide if the two Moto guys make me want to try Moto more or less. I have a hard time thinking of going there when a Grant Achatz place is basically right next door.

By week three, the format will be exactly like every other season.

Really, this new format is only unusual in the large number of contestants that actually start out on-air. We have seen season before where people got the boot right away without ever getting into the Top Chef "house" via a "do or die" quickfire elimination.

Speaking of Moto... Do they have some sort of code for their chefs and cooks that require them to have weird hair and love headbands? :)

Maybe it helps with their attempt to have an avant-garde mystique? I dunno, I was wondering the same thing.
