Did anyone beside me find it ironic that the chefs go to "Virginia's first totally certified organic and humane farm" right after the quickfire where they tortured dozens of Maryland Blue Crabs?

I mean, they were seasoning them live, chopping them up live, and even tossing em into the oven live.

Is that normal? (I've always tried to kill lobsters very quickly by throwing them into hot boiling water for a fast kill.)

crab and lobsters need to be kept alive until it's time to cook them. And boiling or steaming whole certainly isn't the only way to cook 'em.

I'm having a hard time getting into this season for some reason. Not sure why. I'm still liking Kenny, though.

I like Kenny, but Angelo seems to be doing better overall so far.

Both of them are pretty well. They seem to be the strongest two.

Though last season (las vegas) they seemed to have a bunch of really stong people throughout.

It's considered acceptable to kill crustaceans by immersing them in boiling water. From what I understand, they die quickly, and don't feel pain from heat/burns like mammals. Their nervous system is pretty simple, so I don't think it's cruel. After all, some crab species will escape a losing fight by pulling off it's own arm!

I'm watching this on amazon right now. Did Angelo actually say, "I had crabs, it brought back bad memories." I rewound and that's what it sounded like.

Is that not highly inappropriate to discuss right then and not the same kind of crabs anyway? or did I just misshear him?

Cause I'm gonna say, I live a few blocks from his sandwich shop (pretty good food actually, different tasting too), but who wants to have crab boy make your sandwich? He's very nice, but that's gross. Please tell me he said something else!

wow, that just seems like a strange joke, just because who wants to associate that with your food. you're probably right though.

I agree. Last season they had so much talent that it just makes this season feel a little less special.

I am excited for Jest Dessert (or whatever that version is called) except that Gail will always be on it. I can't stand her.

I thought that also but then noticed his face never broke the sad look. So it seemed like it wasn't a joke. :) Which made it even more bizarre.

Chefs always make dirty jokes. Their profession is almost like porn -- very guttural, very much about raw senses, with lots of shady people involved. Top Chef makes all the pros look like angels.

They don't all behave that way in the kitchen. :)

Yep, that's what I heard too. My jaw dropped, I LOL'd, and went back and listened to it again.

I have decided to believe he was kidding. :D

Well joke or not, all I think about now when I see him is itching scratching and cooking.

I didn't feel like he was kidding either. Maybe he's good at deadpan.

I'll enjoy watching him & Kenny I guess. Not a lot else going on.

I think lots of people thought he was serious, including Esquire:

    http://www.esquire.com/blogs/food-for-men/top-chef-season-7-episode-5-071510

Maybe I should go ask him. haha, Angelo man, are you scratchin' and cookin'? It's just really dumb joke to make when you are cooking peoples' food. My guess is that he was joking because I'm not sure blue crabs would really remind him of genital crabs, the whole thing was just lame. Yet the image persists.

Do they need to put in a laugh track like Two and A Half Men? He was joking and was able to commit to the joke. First time I didn't hate Angelo.

Like others have said, it's hard for me to get into this season. Last season was too damn good.

EDIT: I read the article to be a tongue in cheek reference to his comment.
