I was thinking of purchasing a TIVO box off ebay and putting a comcast cable card in it so I can get all my HD channels without renting a box from Comcast on my 2nd tv. What I don't know is if I need to have a working TIVO subscription to make this work. I have no interest in TIVO functionality, I just want to utilize the box to hold a cable card so I can get my HD channels on LIVE TV on an additional set.

Search the site for "without subscription" and you should turn up a few threads covering your situation and which box would be best for what you have in mind. (I'm pretty sure the Premiere completely disables itself without a sub now, the older ones may not).

You may need to subscribe whatever you get for one month to get it set up, but they've done away with the 1 year commitment period, so you can pay $12.95 one time and then cancel.
