So, I know, I've read a bunch of threads about this, but I am having a hard time thinking this is drive failure.

This unit was connected to a UPS battery backup SP, and of course the power went out, and the UPS battery died and then I powered everything back up, and this ONE tivo won't get past powering up. My FAVOURITE tivo.

Any other tips for getting past powering up?

Why would the power being stopped, like pulling the plug on it, kill the HD? I mean, how else is one ever to MOVE a tivo?

Didn't there used to be some BUTTON combination that would boot to a differant sector or something?

I mena, ARRGGH, I have an entire season of simpsons to watch on that drive~

Hard drives can fail without warning. You might try opening the cover, reseating the IDE ribbon cable and power cable to the drive. Most likely, the drive is toast.

So, new data point. This was a two drive upgraded system, and when I pull DRIVE 2, on the END of the IDE cable, which was set to SLAVE, the primary drive is still on the MIDDLE of the IDE cable and set to MASTER, I get to the screen, JUST A FEW MOMENTS MORE.

So, I am getting a second step down the road.

Anyone have a link to SAVINGS PROGRAMS and setting up a new drive from TWO previous drives?

Does anyone know, If I use something like spinrite to get the drives back, do they still need to be connected to a win98 machine?

My credit union has some excellent SAVINGS PROGRAMS.
    :)

It's amazing how many people don't post stuff like this in the TiVo upgrade forum.
You'll get a lot more help there.

I had the same problem and called directv. The customer service told me wait 30 sec and reboot . Crashed again. Then she put me on hold while she checked on something. When she put me on the hold the green light on the tivo box went out. Then I just pushed the standby button and the tivo went right to the channel I was recording at the time. Working fine now.

SpinRite boots on its own from floppy or CD - whatever OS you have normally on the PC isn't used.
