Sorry for the duplicate.. just realized I had posted in the other forum. Since it's tech help related i posted here now.

I just detached my failing MyDVR Expander, did the three thumbs down, clear thing and it then got stuck in a loop with a green screen saying serious error, may take up to 3 hours but then it would reboot shortly after.

Then after numerous reboots I got the external storage missing screen and now it's stuck in a loop where it just keeps returning to that screen. Each time that I do three thumbs down and clear it then stays on the next screen for like 10 seconds then reboots back to the external storage missing screen.

Anyone with an idea of how to get out of this?

Had that happen to my Tivo HD.. I was having some stuttering, skipping, freezing issues on it so I figured I was having a hard drive issue with the internal drive or my DVR Expander. So I tried removing the Expander, and restarted. It was stuck in that exact loop you describe. After calling Tivo support, it was determined that the interal drive was bad and needed to be replaced. But they did have me try some kickstart tests, but no change. Hopefully better luck for you.

Did any of the kickstarts seem to actually work? I can't even get it to go into the 54 test menu.

I'm going to try restoring from an image. Been meaning to buy a USB SATA adapter anyway.

No, I couldn't get any of the kickstarts to work after removing the Expander. Although before I removed it, the SMART tests passed for both drives, which I guess shows those aren't entirely accurate, I guess.

So you at least got to 54 with it plugged in? I couldn't even do that. I tried repeatedly. I sure I had to have done it right as I did get the red/yellow to come up after pressing pause following the "green" blink and right after pressing 54 the lights did go out.

I had the same issue, couldn't get to the kickstarts, and a new HD didn't fix the problem. I ended up buying a Premiere. I had the S3 HD unit.

Same exact thing--constant rebooting, with kickstarts not working.

Oh, I think I understand now. Rebooting but just not stuck in the same loop.
