Tivo Series 2 DT not receiving digital channels?

I saw an earlier thread on this but it didn't answer my question. I recently acquired a Series 2 dual tuner but, as far as I can tell, the cable lineup that the Tivo recognizes is only the analog one. My understanding is that there is one analog and one digital tuner in the box so I can do one of each type or two analog channels. The problem is that the channel lineup does not show the digital companion for the analog channels. For instance, my cable provider (Suddenlink) maps ESPN on analog channel 26 with the digital version (not HD) on 26-1. My TV gets both channels but the Tivo does not. That is when both are connected directly to the cable input with no cablebox. Any ideas?

I don't have an S2 DT, but unless I am much mistaken, the S2 DT does not have a digital tuner, at all. Even if it did, it would be pretty much useless, since the unit does not have a CableCard slot. You'll need a CATV company supplied STB in order to tune the digital channels.

No series 2 TiVo has a digital tuner. The only way to get digital channels and still be able to record 2 channels is to add a cable box connected via a/v. Then you would be able to record 1 digital channel and one analog channel or two analog channels.

All series 2 TiVos have a analog tuner, even the dual tuner model. You would need a digital cable box connected to the video inputs to receive digital cable, and splitting the cable before the box with 1 going to the coax input will record any analog channels available. Some cable co. Will reduce/remove analog channels in favor for digital.

Series 3 and premiere models have dual digital tuners.

Series 2 including dual tuner model only have analog tuners. They were out way before the time of the analog-to-digital transitions.

Ok, so whatever I thought I read about the Series 2 DT having one NTSC and one ATSC tuner was incorrect. I did see the connection schematic for hooking up both the direct cable input and a cable box input (using the AV ports) but apparently all that does is to use the cable box as a digital to analog converter. I don't need to do that because I get analog, digital, and HD channels all over the same cable connection. It's not a big deal to only be able to record two analog channels (I do have a Tivo HD with cable card for my main setup) but thought maybe I was missing out on a capability of the DT. Thanks for the replies.

No, the cable box does not act as a digital to analog converter. It acts as a digital tuner.

Since this discussion is about the Series 2 DT, information about the Series 3 and Premiere is irrelevant.

A lot of the original propaganda for the series 2 advertised it as being able to receive "1 analog and 1 digital" channel. Imagine my surprise when my new DT that was replacing my ST didn't tune any digital channels. It simple allowed for control of the required digital cable box which was not at all clear at the time.

Which outputs an analog signal to the Tivo - thus my assertion.

My point is that it isn't converting the digital channels to analog channels. It isn't "converting" anything. It is tuning to a specific channel and the outputting that data via a/v output or through an RF modulator.

I think this misleading device naming started almost 60 years ago with the first UHF "converters" which were in reality external UHF tuners.
