Tivo remote not working on most button presses; not a remote problem though?

A week ago my remote started to only work sporadically. I can get one or two buttons to work, then it stops working for about 10 seconds. Very annoying. The yellow light only comes on during those first two presses, then it stops. Also, the same problem exists whether I am controlling the tivo or functions on my TV (volume, power, etc.).
I got a new remote thinking this would solve my remote problem. Wrong. The new remote has the same problem, works on the first push but not after that for about 10 seconds. I checked the connections, reset the tivo, checked the IR (according to the remote FAQ), all to no avail. I have a series2 tivo. What should I do?

I apologize for asking this question and dont take it the wrong way, its just sometimes better to get a second set of eyes on a process when we miss something that we might be looking at too many times to see it, but you didnt happen to use the batteries from the first remote to power the NEW remote did you?

Any question should be fair game when it comes to getting our tivos to work, right? I have switched the batteries plenty of times for both remotes, and I still have the problem... I should have mentioned that.

ok, you have made me nervous because this sounds identical to my latest issue. about 2 weeks ago my remote started acting up. i changed batteries and that didnt help, the crazy thing was it would be fine if you waited 7-10 seconds between each press of a button, but dont get too fast or the wait was longer. after a few days of that it stopped working altogether. we took it apart and made sure no moisture or film was preventing contact and no help. so i have a new one ordered, should be here on monday. i just assumed it died and dread figuring out how to program the new one. please post if you get this resolved because i have a fear now that the new one will act up. i am one of those that if there is an issue i get to have it. just wanted to let you know about my remote issue and i will let you know if the new one has problems.

Have you installed any compact fluorescents in the room lately? I've seen them drive IR receivers crazy.

Also look for some other stray remote around that might be getting activated somehow, like under a couch cushion. They can do strange things if not rounded up and taught to behave. The TiVo might not respond to their signals but they cause interference with the TiVo remote's signal.

This reminds me of a problem that didnt click at first. I had a repeater to run my tivo in my bedroom to my living room. Worked perfecly for about 4 months, then suddenly for no apparent reason its started getting finicky when I was pointing the remote at the tivo, but worked fine when it was pointed at the repeater in the other room, symptoms were similar to your problem but instead of a timed problem it just seemed like an aiming problem (maybe the same symptom different interpretation) after batteries, moving the sender and receiver around and several other things I tried replugging the power supplies in. BINGO

But it wasnt the repeaters, when I was unplugging the adapters, I also unplugged the BRAND NEW WII. And that was the culprit.

The WII bar which is just an IR source was being pumped through the repeater and interfering with the actual remote signal in the other room.

So any WII s in the mix?

What model Tivo? The Humax models have a known issue with their IR sensor.

for me, i have no compact flourescents, i have checked every remote in the house and cant find issues with that, and i don't even know what a repeater is.
but i don't think any of those thoughts apply to my situation tho i thank you all for your suggestions and i am checking every one as possible.
when the new one gets here next week i will let post whether it works properly or not. it is urc-6131n and had some good reviews, seems most similar to the original. my tivo is a toshiba sd-h400.

After much frustration, I also just identified the Wii as a source of interference with the TiVo S3 IR reception. It turned out that having the Wii on with the Wii remotes laying around in front of the TV was enough to make the IR reception sporadic at best. Turned the Wii power off and smooth sailing resumed. I haven't played around with the possibility that just putting the remotes out of the TiVo's line of sight might fix the problem...seems reasonable, though. Easy enough to turn the thing off, of course. ;)

actually, i have a different problem. my remote won't control the tivo at all, but will control functions on the television. i don't have a wii and changed all batteries and even tried an old series 1 remote that normally does work. there are no other remotes in the area. there was a power outage, but the tivo series 2 is plugged into a surge supressor. the yellow light doesn't glow at all indicating it is not receiving any ir signal. need help. can't afford a new tivo and have many battlestar gallacticas to watch.
