Is this the only fix or is there something else I can do/try?

    1) Power off (i.e. unplug)
    2) Power on (i.e. plug in)
    3) Wait 5 to 8 minutes for unit to power up... SUCKS!

    Note:
    1) The thumbs down/thumbs up/play twice does NOT help/work.
    2) Switching the Tivo Menu from HD to SD does NOT help/work

Maybe they will exchange it. That is not normal for it to lockup/freeze.

Been there! Done that! The unit I returned would freeze/lock every other day.

I agree with those that said this is not normal behavior.

If you can not find a real fix you could send your TiVo through a manual restart every few days to see if that keeps it from locking up. At least then you could control when your TiVo is restarting, I tend to restart all of mine every few weeks or anytime they seem to be sluggish.

    Good Luck,

It seem to be working for a while but it frooze up the day after I did the manual restart. Makes me think the nightly/daily update/download TiVo performs might be causing the issue.

Just FYI - I have two TiVo XL's and they work fine.

Glad I know I'm not alone. Going to call them tomorrow.

TiVo support told me my signal strength (low 80's) was weak and my cable provider (Time Warner) needed to install an amplifier. I told them I wasn't having any issues with the picture but they insisted due to RS Uncorrected/Corrected Errors I was receiving.

Time Warner came out and the guy said the signal strength was fine (within the range) and that I didn't need an amplifier but did it anyway. He installed the FRA1-1510 amplifier which did increased my signal strength (to mid/high 90's) but it did not resolve the problem. TiVo then agreed to give me a new box which is encountering the same problem.

Is anyone using external storage? Just wondering if there could be an issue with my drive causing this issue.

Is seems that when the TiVo locks up, there is some pixelation on the screen, which would lend weight to the low signal strength issue (I haven't yet checked mine). However, I've had four TiVos in this same spot over the years, and this is the only one I have had problems with.

    Curious.
