    The problem is they have the costs right. They say that lifetime is much more expensive, but int reality it is much cheaper than the alternatives from the cable companies when the cost is spread out over multiple years.

    Agreed, but either $20 monthly or $1000 upfront is a tough pill to swallow for most folks in today's economy. If you saw my other thread today, you can see the result - only 500k Cablecards in the field now. Sure, price is not the only reason, but Tivo is high. A premier DVR is a niche within a niche, and I can see why they'd want to get out of the hardware biz.
