I know we have partners on the site that sell a drive ready to install to expand capacity of your TiVo.

The way that I understand this is that I lose all my previous settings, recordings and thumbs data when I replace this drive (replace, not add second drive).

My question is this - could I not just go buy a drive, remove the factory drive and use some kind of copy utility to copy bit for bit from the original drive to the new drive thus saving all of my recordings, season passes, thumbs data etc?

I'm sure I'm not the first person to think about this, however I'm not exactly sure what to search on to find my answers.
