I have two of the same model (original Phillips series 1) TiVo, both still with the original factory drives. One of the units has a broken TV tuner, while the other's disk drive is whining and making me concerned for its life expectancy. So I'd like the drive from the first, preferably with its data intact, coupled with the second unit.

I need a subscription on the new unit, obviously. But if I just swap the drives as-is, with their current contents, will it work? Or do I need to re-image the good drive before putting it in the new unit?

    Thanks!

It should work, but it will require you do a CLEAR AND DELETE EVERYTHING to "marry" the drive to the box.

C&DE is not necessary at all with the SA S1 units. You can drop a hard drive from tivo A into Tivo B and continue right where you left off. All of the settings and existing recordings stay in tact.
