I thought she was ok but all of the male friends seem weakly written.
I finally watched the Tivo preview tonight. I'm not a huge Zoey fan (meaning, I couldn't even tell you anything else she's ever been in) so to me it was just a new show. It was decent, but I didn't love it....but I'll keep the SP to see where it goes.
That's clear: it's "Zooey".
She was great in Tin Man...
Almost Famous also is required viewing (although she has only a small role in it).
So I watched the Pilot tonight.
I LOVE Zooey Deschanel. She was OK in the show, but just OK. This Pilot was AWFUL though. It felt way longer than 30 minutes. (felt like it was a couple hours - and not in a good way)
The sad thing is, I'll watch it, no matter how bad it is. Because I love Zooey.
I guess the good thing is, it can't get any worse. At least I don't think it can.
It was Awful.
watched it tonight.
Hopefully, the episodes after the pilot tone down the over the top zaniness of Zooey's character.. Because it was as I feared from the commercials, just too much. I have hopes because it's not uncommon for shows to make some adjustments after they get picked up. I think I'll miss Damon Wayans Jr's. character. I actually liked him. Dunno if he gets replaced with a different actor, they drop that third male roommate, or if they find a new third male roommate.
What makes you think they'll drop him? Checking out IMDB, they've already filmed a half season of it and he's listed as being in 13 of 14 episodes.
Okay, doing some digging I see that DW Jr is on another show and that he's getting replaced by Lamorne Morris who's also filmed 13 episodes as a character named Winston.
Also, I see they're bringing in a love interest for her. I figured they were going to set her up with Nick (the guy who's girlfriend dumped him 6 months ago), it certainly appeared that way to me. I have to assume they're going to go for a Jim and Pam dynamic. He's going to be 'the friend' for the first few seasons and when the show needs a jump start in a few seasons (or if it's 'organically' heading in that direction) they'll put them together.
Think again. Without Damon Jr it'll be even less funny. The ONLY thing this show has going for it (outside of Zooey and her cuteness) is the d-bag jar. That is the only chuckle it got from me and that joke can only be funny for so long.
A meh pilot....so far, that's three for three on the bad sitcom pilots I've watched, and I'm giving them all a second chance as they have SOME chance to get better. But I'm not optimistic. This one at least I laughed a couple of times. I like the D-bag jar. Thought that was the funniest thing going.
I watched it and was far from loving it. Actually disliked it. The characters are all too cardboard except the Owen Wilson look-a-like. Zooey is just crazy and the guys are dumb. From the commercials, I figured the guys were all gay because why would none of them make a play for her. Why the heck would they be trying to find her a man because she is so loveable but none of them love her? And how did they bond with an annoying, manic person in like two seconds. All stupid even for sitcom-land.
But, as with almost any pilot, I will give it an ep or two to see if it finds its footing. Somehow I doubt it will.
I watched this last night and it was the second decent show I've seen this short season, including episodes of returning shows. For a first episode I thought it went off well.
The other good one, IMHO, was Free Agents.
Nice to see someone else mention watching and enjoying Free agents besides me.
As far as The New Girl. I enjoyed it but they really need to dial the goffiness of her character back a notch.
I really liked Free Angents. I am not understanding the hatred for it.
I have not seen much hatred of it in the place I look (mostly here) mainly silence.
Liked the pilot; disliked free agents. Wayans plays the best guy character of the three; sad to hear he's leaving.
I had heard all kinds of good things about it from various TV critics who saw it at press tour, but when I watched it, I just couldn't see what they enjoyed about it. Zooey's character's quirks felt forced, and none of the guy characters were remotely interesting. The only thing I found funny was the "D-bag Jar."
I really liked Free Agents. Did not like New Girl.
Although, I'm gonna watch it again to see if maybe I like it better the second time around.
Do they get to see more than just the pilot? If not, I don't get it either. But if they do see more than the pilot, maybe they toned it down a lot.
I see I haven't commented in this thread since watching the pilot. I was not super impressed by it. I'll watch at least one more episode to see if it gets any better.
As far as I know, none of the critics I follow have seen the second episode of the show. At least, if they have, they haven't mentioned it. They were all basing their opinions on the pilot, and on their irrational love for Zooey. If you had been following several critics on Twitter during Zooey's panel at the recent critics press tour, you'd know what I'm talking about.
