Yeah, I remember it being implied in one of the original trilogy, in either a prologue or epilogue. Never got the Seattle connection in those books, but Terry Brooks did live right up the hill from me in the Seattle suburbs for a bit.

Yea, I don't think it was until the Genisis books (so just recently) which was actually about the Great Wars and the years after where he specifically wrote that it was the Pacific NW area he set the Four Lands to be in. The intro on the show set it in the Seattle area pretty quick with the space needle ruin and such. I think for the show they had to connect that up pretty quickly for the audience vs. waiting 30 years like the books did. :)

As for the show, things are certainly a bit different then the Elfstones book, in particular how they set up the Chosen and Amberle. I do like this Amberle already better then the book though so I have hope. Despite some of the teen "angst" in the show, probably from being on MTV, it's similar to Flash or Arrow on The CW. They have a bit of that but I'm hopeful.

Now I need to dust off my old books and dive back in...

Is there a way to watch this without the annoying (to me) popups with program notes?

Not all airings have the popup notes. The first 2 episode were shown multiple times. Only once when I was watching it live did I see the show notes. The second time I caught it live, it did not have any notes. I didnt see anything in the program description to tell it was with or without notes.

From the guide data that I've seen the Saturday showings have the popup notes. Be sure to record the first airings on Tuesday. But both get recorded as they show up as "new" episodes so my One Pass gets me one of each. The episode description of the ones with popups does make it clear it has them.

I loved Sword of Shannara as a kid. Took me a while to realize it was a LoTR ripoff in so many ways.

But I'll give this show a shot. Shea and the gang?

Yeah, what the heck are they even talking about.

Sword of Shannara was just as medieval times as the rest of the genre. They traveled by horse, foot and horse-drawn carriage. They stayed at inns. They hunted with bow and arrow and cooked on camp fires.

The opening montage of every episode shows the Needle and the rest of downtown Seattle being hit by a massive wind. This is presumably what destroyed them and is suggestive of what a nuclear bomb does.

Saw this show up on Netflix this past week. Watched the first four episodes. As mentioned above, it is decent fantasy filler, not great TV, but if you're into scifi and fantasy it will work when nothing else is on. It is a bit CW'ish in the casting and teen-like drama.

It's very much a CW teen drama type, but it was still fun to watch. Production values is about on par with Sci-Fi shows.

The Amish rave make be scream and delete all recorded episodes. Horrible. Can't believe what they've done to this great book franchise.

Just started watching this on Netflix. I have to say I did not enjoy the Sword of Shannara so I skipped this, but gave it a try on Netflix out of boredom and I'm enjoying it quite a lot. Way better than what I remember of the first book (I never read past the first one).

Is there only the one season?

They skipped the first book, starting with the second. they refer back to some of the events and characters from the first -- Flick, Shea, Bremen, etc. but the series doesn't cover them at all.
