Just watched the season finale. With the little flashback sequence at the end, it looked more like a series finale. Checked the net and saw an announcement from ABC back in Jan that it had been renewed. Can anyone confirm that it sill be coming back in the fall? Love this show! Only thing we watch on ABC.

Initially, I found this show very fun but it has progressively become less and less funny over the short life span. Originally, it played up a family that needed to struggle financially in a very realistic manner and has become a dark show with uncomfortable unrealistic situations. I know it's a comedy but I feel it has lost its umph - meanwhile Modern Family has grown and gotten better, this is a sad little comedy.

Not sad at all and in many cases on the mark for real life.

I haven't seen the finale yet, but I still love this show. And I have to say, it's one of the few sitcoms on TV that I feel safe letting my 11 year old daughter watch with us. I'm no prude and I love me some adult oriented humor, but it's nice to have a sitcom where the whole family can watch and is fun. I find a lot of what they do very realistic. I think they got the characters just right, especially the kids. The lazy teen boy who thinks he's hot stuff, the awkward early teen, who knows here "place" yet is still optimistic that things will always be better, and the geeky kid who just doesn't fit in with the other kids his age (yeah, the mumbling under his breath is a bit over the top, but still funny now that he doesn't do it more than once an episode). Sue is my favorite character, and I find myself rooting for her to achieve every week.

The misspelling of Sue's name was priceless. Said as a guy whose last name is always misspelled and whose son has learned to live with it, just as Sue has.

Exactly this. In fact my wife and I were discussing just this point last night. We enjoy both The Middle and Modern Family, but for different reasons. The Middle is based squarely in real struggles families face. Sure, they are exaggerated for comedic effect, but nonetheless very relatable for real families. Modern Family, on the other hand is also very funny but it is a farce after the style of British humor. Two totally different styles of comedy.

Totally agree that The Middle is an excellent and "relatable" depiction of an average family that real people can relate to and see themselves in.

I too, like the OP, was a little taken aback by the montage of "moments" from the series that this season finale concluded with. Made it look like a series finale than just a season finale. I hope there's not something "we don't know" about a last minute cancellation of the show for next season. I still enjoy it.

I like The Middle, but it's nowhere near the quality of Modern Family. It's a completely different kind of show.

I've read this multiple times and still can't figure out how The Middle has become a "dark show".

In fact this may be the LEAST dark show on television.
