Episodes 4-6 are still airing. All are on Hulu.
this was terribad
Count me with the confused.. I had seen a commercial for it and I was expecting it to be a spoof on spinoffs from the 80's (aftermash, etc.). But as a backdoor pilot, it was pretty sad.
The charm of the Goldbergs imo is that they relive aspects of the 80's and have a lark with it, romanticizing actual events. Now had the narrator talked about how it was 1990-something and the schools were being taken over by insuring that *every* student got the "Best Student" award on a regular basis or whatever, maybe it could make for a 90's spinoff. Maybe that's where they were going with it, but it felt like it really missed the mark.
I did not care for this episode, and didn't know about it being a backdoor pilot. All I could figure was that the regular cast was on strike! Lol
I tried. I really did.
Didn't make it past the first 10 minutes.
I didn't like it much either. Tim Meadows can't carry a show.
Nor did I. I didn't even last that long.
I absolutely LOVE the Goldbergs, but this one is a one-and-done for me.
I would just keep the original show and, eventually (especially as the kids grow up!), carry it into the 90s.
Same here. We quit right around the 10 minute mark. It was pretty awful.
No worries about one and done, this was a pilot and the show didn't get picked up by the network so no more are coming.
You guys that quit after 10 minutes missed out. It got even worse. Much worse.
The fun thing is, I just started watching The Goldbergs about a month ago. I didn't realize what a gem it is! I am having a blast watching reruns.
It's really in it's prime now, once we have gotten to know the characters well. My fear though is that they will take the character traits of the characters and make it their ONLY character trait. They've done it to some extent with Beverly and to a lesser extent the older brother. I don't remember Bev being so over the top as she is now. Still, it's a very funny show about characters I really like and even care about.
I remember watching the first episode and thinking Beverly was too over the top then. But I had also been more familiar with her from watching Reno 911. I don't know if she's more overt now or not, but she's out there. I agree with you on Barry. He's becoming very one dimensional.
But I think they could have spun off something with George Segal, but I would guess his age would make them leery. But he's a guy that can carry a series and the character has been pretty shallow so far. At 83 years old though I don't think you can really do it.
The one crazy thing is the real Barry actually became a doctor. Based on the character in the show, that seems impossible.
I thought about doing one with George Segal. The obvious one with him is he moves to FL and is in a Retirement home (Del Boca Vista?) I always thought that a fun spinoff of Seinfeld would have been if they spun off his parents in one of these retirement condos developments. They could do something similar with Pops. And since he has a reputation with the ladies, there could be some fun there. But yeah, with his age, it would be risky (that said, if they could get it to go for a year or so, they could potentially move the focus to one of the other characters.) But, does a show, in this day and age, like this appeal to the only demo that matters? Probably not.
Thank God for this thread...I just thought it was one weird Goldbergs episode!
now it all makes sense.
Haha, I hadn't thought of the demo. You're right. It would appeal to me, but who cares? Hey, it worked with Golden Girls.
I'm a member of this club too. Gave up about ten minutes in.
Today's remark from the stupid gallery - Am I the only one who thought, for at least a few seasons, that this was the other Adam Goldberg? Even when they showed pics of him as a kid it didn't look that different and only last year did I actually see that he was not the comedic actor who I thought he was.
You mean the guy from Saving Private Ryan?
