I don't think they can predict the cycles with 100% accuracy. But they can predict them better than we can. That's all you need to do to make a lot of money.

The Sean/Leila storyline is really grating on my nerves. Those two are both horrible actors. Every scene they are in is like watching a parody. Ugh.

But I love the rest of the show though--at it's core, the storyline is pretty compelling.

Another poster already said they just need better knowledge then other investors.

They seem to be providing some of their knowledge to existing companies. It's also possible advance notice as to what company will suddenly coming up with a new "discovery" also helps.

I have no interest in the Sean/Leila subplot. It's a big bowl of "Who cares?" to me.

I liked the other subplots until the FBI agent was miraculously framed instead of Lee. That turned me off.

Agreed. Thomas specifically said that they could ONLY travel a few thousand miles via the portal.

For me, the most interesting reveal was that they're all just looking for a way home. They weren't sent here (whether here is our time or just our planet) to do anything specific. They lost/sidelined/stranded and didn't intend to land here in the first place.

So that begs the question: Is the 'event' an unintended consequence of their arrival (possibly due to the discovery of their abilities by unscrupulous factions that want to exploit them) rather than something that was planned ahead of time?

They're human and they speak English, so that narrows down their origin, I think. They even speak English to each other.

When I say "future" or "evolved humans", I don't mean specifically time travelers. Maybe time passes differently (faster) where they're from, and they are existing at the same time as Earth humans but a long way away. That could explain how they have advanced/evolved/etc, and how they age so slowly on Earth. Maybe back wherever they're from, everyone they knew has aged and died.

Of course, "alien" means anything not native.

I agree on the "trying to get home" reveal. Of course, that opens 50 more questions. Why were they here? Where did they come from? Will we ever see their ship? :)

I think we're reading too much into this. Speaking English could just be out of convenience for the TV viewers, just like we see the aliens on V talking English to each other in private.

Or they may want to stay in deep cover and blend in by not reverting to their original language, or not want to risk being overheard accidentally.

How about "they're human AND they're from another planet"? Humans were snatched by real aliens in the 1800's and brought to another planet, where they evolved (both biologically and technologically) at a faster rate than humans did on Earth. That's why they speak English and why they have Earth names.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I meant by the "Gary Seven" scenario.

i loved that part. and for those nitpicking about whether their advanced math would predict things accurately, think about it. Warrent Buffet hasn't been perfect, just very very good. That's all they're getting at here. Don't read too much into it.

i also liked how they had Jim Vance doing the news. For those non-DC area folks, he's a local news caster for the NBC affiliate that's been around for like 30 years. So i thought it was a nice touch.

i also wonder if maybe the whole Murphy thing is just a way of tricking Simon. Maybe Blake DID recognize the V in the elevator, but since he didn't have proof, and the DNA test came back as human, he still suspects Simon, but is just pretending to believe his innocence.

When he said he was giving his information to someone in the midwest to trade on, my first thought was Buffet.

Isn't this show most likely going to be cancelled?

I think it's on it's last leg..seems it's been dying in the ratings since day 1.....I wonder if they have a "here's the whole mystery wrapped up in a bow" ep ready for the end?

I tried keeping up with the first 4 or so eps, but it was so horrible I gave up.

Depends on what you mean. It's been picked up for the rest of this season, and NBC has enough other holes to fill that it's unlikely this show will be pulled prior to May. However, if you're wondering about whether it will be renewed for Season 2 and beyond, that won't be determined until sometime in the spring and will depend on several factors, including the ratings the show continues to get, the quality of new programs in NBC's development slate and the status of the Comcast/NBC merger.

If I had to guess right now, I'd say this will be a one-season show. But that doesn't mean it's not worth watching.

Thoughts about the Eventers and the little girls:

I think that the Others are from the future, and their "1%" DNA variation is due to genetic engineering. The little girls are victims of early experiments by the old man's people, trying to create a gene therapy that replicates the anti-aging alterations in the Others' DNA. The girls faces look unnaturally old as a result of the process backfiring on them. The bit about the gene-engineered flowers was a hint that the old man is into that sort of stuff.

Further, I think that the "mother" thing is a hint that Sophia may be the original inventor of the Others' anti-aging gene alterations. That would explain why they all follow her, and why she's the only one who looks old --she applied the therapy to herself in adulthood, whereas the others were born with it. She's their "mother" in the sense that she created their uber-mensch race.

BTW, is it just me, or did Thomas have those same flowers in his place? They were visible at the edge of frame in one shot. Hmm...

BTW, I think they screwed up getting Lee off the hook. In the first episode, it was stated that the Others were physically distinguishable from humans even without genetic testing. With Lee already in the hospital and unconscious, the quickest test would have been to simply examine him for those anatomical differences. Even if the blood test didn't confirm it, the physical anomalies (whatever they are) would be enough to keep him under suspicion.

Are you sure that's what they said in the pilot? I only remember the DNA being 1% different. Seems like if there are other physical anomalies, then Simon and Thomas hiding out for all these years shouldn't have been so easy.
