I love the closing montage song. Wife (who doesn't usually watch the show but was sitting in the room) and I were singing along. Love the Pretenders and that was a signature song of their first album.

I guess we assumed right that the jump will be into the porn on VHS tape industry. I'm guessing that Lori winds up in "the valley" doing those videos. I'm going to guess that Candy joins her after being disowned by her parents and them taking her son. Frankie turned out to be a decent guy, but I swore he was going to get it before the year ended. Not really into the gay couple, but I guess they are there to just prove that once you get involved with the mafia, there's no way out. We are seeing that with Vincent too. He really wants to get out, but keeps getting in deeper. And of course, the pimps are falling one after the other and the survivors are starting to move into something else. The beginning of the end of The Deuce as a sleazy area...the cleanup is beginning.

Now that you bring up the gay couple - - - him getting pretty much free and clear of them only to go back to them for a loan was a dumb dumb move.

I enjoyed the season and the finale "Inside the Pretend" (ending montage with The Pretenders "Mystery Achievement"), but all those scene jumps made me dizzy :)

And Treme, also on HBO. It was actually the first thing by him I watched. Then went back and watched the Wire.

He also did several miniseries for HBO:

    The Corner
    Generation Kill
    Show Me a Hero

The Wire is still his best television work, IMO.

I never watched Treme, not sure why. I should go back and watch it. Does it have that "David Simon" DNA about it?

Didn't realize Show Me a Hero was his. That was an amazing, fantastic mini-series. Must see TV.

I watched a bout half a season of Treme, and got bored with it. But might want to go back and watch now that I've visited New Orleans and I have a better feel for what the show might be about. As for the Simon feel, I'm probably not the best person to ask, as I was not a fan of The Wire.

The Deuce returns tonite, Mon Sept 9th. Only six episodes for the final season- and we've time-jumped to 1985.

I think 6 episodes are enough for this type of show. I've liked it, but the story has dragged at times. Oh, and i was surprised it was moved off Sunday nights. I know AT&T is trying to push another original night for HBO, but this always felt like a Sunday show to me.

Thanks, good review. I agree with Sepinwall, it feels like far more is changing in this world than just five years ahead.

It's definitely a Sunday night show. Monday is for ANW and other reality fluff, Sunday is cable series heaven.
