Tivo+ may not be long for this world after all:

WSJ: Comcast might buy the free streaming app Xumo TV

Looks like one more FU to Tivo after they forced Comcast to remove features from the X1 platform, as I am sure they would end the Tivo partnership.

Maybe, to get even, Comcast would let the use stand. ;)

Sure, but it’s clear TiVo intended to use this service as a way to make money. If they can’t do that, it will probably put TiVo’s future revenue in question, at least for consumer. Then again, with the latest merger, who knows....

Xumo helped expose TiVo's true colors, and Comcast gets the last laugh. What a bunch of morons and fools.

I know I have been questioning Rovi/Tivo's true colors for a long time. I have overlooked that Tivo was a patent troll and that is how they have stayed alive this long, but when Rovi merged with them and we started seeing some long time Tivo design folks leave (especially right before launching a platform they were proud to create) it put into question (for me at least) the long term roadmap that Tivo had in mind (something said employees would have access to). As we see the fruits of the labor come to light in that long term roadmap (ads, bad guide data, Tivo+) it is becoming VERY clear to me why these people left, and IMO was a great career decision for them as they didn't have to sell out their beliefs to appease the beancounters that wanted to squeeze out an extra few pennies from each subscriber at the loss of a polished product.

Not that I am saying they haven't had to appease the beancounters before. Ads have almost always been a part of Tivo, its just that they USED to be something that either enhanced the product (fall previews of shows) or could be easily ignored (Showcases, anyone?). Nothing ever interrupted your viewing, and even pause ads were short lived (and easy to back out of).

True colors? As in, they are a corporation looking to make a profit?

Lots of ways to make a profit though. At one time, Tivo was trying to make a profit by innovation, to the benefit of consumers. Now they are looking to make a profit by exploiting their old innovations and by making moves not improving the consumer experience.

Agreed 100%. And if these are the mistakes that ultimately put them out of business, they *deserve* to be put out of business. It was a good run, but I’ll adapt just fine if and when they die for good. They haven’t innovated in years, they move too slowly, cheap streaming boxes outperform them, and their list of unfulfilled promises remains glaring. After so many years of this, they’ve exhausted my patience, and the entire implementation and rollout of “TiVo+” has been downright embarrassing.

Wow, TiVo is my secondary device after AppleTV. During playback noticed Bolt OTA just sitting there instead of starting playback. Restarting didn't resolve it. Took me a proverbially minute (later once it sort of started working) to see they're cramming commercials hamfistedly in front of recordings. How low is it to have to CALL and opt-out. Pure crap. The ads are almost as cheap and poorly implemented as the ones on this forum.

Now on this Mini, when I select TiVo+ from the home screen, or from the guide, the screen just... goes black. It stays black no matter what I do, no matter how long I wait. It stays black for hours. And again, the only way to exit is to hit the TiVo button. There is no way to even get to the TiVo+ content. And there’s no way to remove it from my box. It’s just a broken feature that I wish I never got.

What a joke. This is “TiVo+.” A sad, pathetic joke.

Most things companies do are to make money. You don't have to use Tivo + (I don't as the content at this time was not interesting enough for me to "opt in" to the agreement). Yeah, you see it taking up space on the guide and menu. But not a horror. I would like to see Tivo stay in business. Quite a few people could live without, I COULD but I have a good number of Tivos so if they go under I'd be out a rather significant amount of $. Tivo + does not BOTHER me, pre rolls do but the one device I have on TE4 I opted out. I don't really care about apps on a Tivo either, I use my Tivos as DVRs, any apps are just extras as far as I'm concerned (and you can get separate/better app devices for a LOT less than a Tivo). Keep the DVR part going, there still is nothing better for someone who just wants to RECORD and watch TV content (IMO), if have to put up with some annoyances so be it if it keeps them in business. Sure wish customer service was better, quality control, testing updates before releasing, web site promotions that work, following through on promises/terms of promotions though.........

This forum has ads? Huh, I never see any, it must be because I set up Pi-Hole as my DNS server or wiper.

What was the excuse not to run TE4 before the ads?

The TE3 folks may need their own forum... Hate to bother them with up to date issues.

They dislike change, they don't like the loss of the "live guide," the inability to manage transfers directly on the TiVo, the inability to transfer recordings from PC -> TiVo, and/or a few other things. But we digress.

*All* things considered, I still prefer TE4 over TE3. And regret waiting as long as I did to upgrade.

Then again, I’m still on a Roamio Plus, with an upgraded HDD, and I have yet to see any pre-roll ads. TiVo+ doesn’t bother me enough to consider downgrading over it. I can avoid it. I just find it pathetic and embarrassing that TiVo released this crap.
