Hi! I'll try this one - The term 'colored' was initially used in a derogatory manner to separate African Americans and to exclude them. This term was used primarily in a time when there were signs up that said 'no coloreds' or 'coloreds only', etc.

The term 'people of color' was a term that was initiated BY people of color to identify without prejudice. Therefore, it is not an unacceptable term because its meaning was not bigoted in nature like the other term was.

    JMHO, FWIW :)

Is white not a color? Should we call whites desaturated?

Technically, white is the absence of color...unless you're talking about light, in which case white is the totality of color.

Reminds me of when I was in college, by the copy machine there were two paper recycling bins, one labeled "white paper" and one labeled "colored paper".

Someone drew a line with a magic marker through "colored paper" and replaced it with "paper of color". :D
